A Must for Lovers of Duke, Ella and Scat-Singing,
By Peter (East of Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Day Dreams: The Best of the Duke Ellington Songbooks (Audio CD)
This 17-song "sampler" of Ella's "beyond category" interpretation of the Ellington songbook is---what else---brilliant! She also has the added benefit Duke's presence and participation not to mention Billy Strayhorn. Any jazz lover of the Duke will eventually want the entire 3-CD collection by Ella, but for those on a tighter budget or just want an intro to Ellington, this is an excellent place to start. Fitzgerald really is the perfect ambassador to carry out Duke's stuff. Rarely have I heard her scat more than she does here; she easily scats at least half a dozen songs, if not more. Personally, I love the small combo songs, such as "Solitude" and "Azure" where Ella is accompanied by just a guitar. Anyone who has heard Billie Holiday sing "Solitude" pretty much thinks she has the definitive version, but Ella's version is entirely different, and dare I say, just as good. Her voice is in pristine, silky-smooth condition. Ellington's crack band is swinging and jamming as ever---the violins zing, the brasses zip and the rhythms flow. This particular songbook really stands out in Ella's legacy. There's also plenty improvising going on between Ella and the guys so you feel as though you're sitting in on all the action.

Never has Ella Fitzgerald sounded better than with Duke Ellington. This CD gives their best work, and it is amazing. Ella was probably the greatest vocalist of the 20th Century and here she swings with the greatest orchestra of the 20th Century. Every song is great and it captures every mood. Ella's scatting on "Take the 'A' Train" is pure Heaven.
