I've had great success using the Pimsleur language CDs to learn phrases in other languages, and I find this book to be a great tool for students to rehearse useful phrases with simple substitutions for specific situations. Each lesson revolves around a language function (mostly employment focused, but there's a whole chapter on 'small talk'), beginning with a dialog. Then there are a number of variations provided to practice plugging into the conversation, followed by a page of grammar focus. Hardly useful for solo study or beginners, but I consider this a great tool for tutors or teachers (about level 3 and higher).
