The lost art of science-fantasy, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Day Of The Giants (Paperback)
Once upon a time, the boundaries of genre fiction weren't as rigid & confining as they are now. This effective little adventure is a case in point: like Edmond Hamilton's classic novella "A Yank At Valhalla," it presents Norse mythology in the (then) contemporary world, but as seen through a more scientific lens. Well, "scientific" by science-fantasy standards, at any rate.
American brothers Leif and Lee Svenson find themselves caught up in the endless battle between the Norse gods & the Frost Giants -- so much so that they're carried across the Rainbow Bridge to lend their aid against the coming of Ragnarok. Interestingly, the trickster god Loki is their best ally, however untrustworthy; the other gods are more single-minded (to be kind), i.e., rather dense, if bloodthirsty.
Let's say no more about the plot -- if you're intrigued, track down a used copy. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's a fast, brisk read, with plenty of action & a broad streak of humor. Yes, the flying saucers on the old Airmont paperback cover have no business being there; but part of the fun is just that sort of tossed-off-in-a-few-minutes artwork. It's not a work for the ages, but it'll top off an idle afternoon very nicely!
