5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the known day hikes
This book is an excellent resource for many of the good day hikes in the area. As with all these types of books, the condition of any of the trails may change from when it was written, as well as the access. If possible, check with the Forest Service or plan a secondary hike in the case that your first choice isn't available.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not to be considered reliable (or did anybody proofread this).
On the surface, this book seems very well constructed but the content is flawed. No, I don't expect trail conditions to remain the same seasonally year after year nor is it a substitute for accurate maps. I do expect driving directions to be correct (some are not, example: trail 119 & 120 right on FR1840 not left) also the trail descriptions need to make sense in areas...

My son continues to find new places to put our feet on the days we have to hike and this book has given him "new" places to discover!

I find the book to be a clear succinct reference which well prepares me for what to expect on the trail without overloading me with details.

This book was great. It includes a lot of information about hikes in the area. I like how it rates the difficulty and how there is a list at the front of the book that quickly shows some of the important information about the hikes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not to be considered reliable (or did anybody proofread this)., July 8, 2011

On the surface, this book seems very well constructed but the content is flawed. No, I don't expect trail conditions to remain the same seasonally year after year nor is it a substitute for accurate maps. I do expect driving directions to be correct (some are not, example: trail 119 & 120 right on FR1840 not left) also the trail descriptions need to make sense in areas that don't change seasonally. Example of this discrepancy is trail 69 and 70; both trails share the first part (FS trail No. 33) yet in 69 there is a 1200 ft climb in the first 1.5 miles but only 700 ft in the same 1.5 mile run for 70. The two descriptions are on opposite pages, but only one can be correct (simple proofreading would have found this). No I'm not nit picking because from this elevation-gain, difficulty rating is factored(#69 is 5(most difficult) with a total distance 7 miles yet #70 is 3 with a total distance 13 miles). I have found other errors while on the trail. I will choose a hike somewhat based on what is written about it, if the basic description is not reliable what's left?
