"Life On A Chain" - Pete Yorn

Biography

His fifth solo studio effort and Vagrant Records debut, Pete Yorn sees the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter peeling away the baroque orchestrations of his critically acclaimed previous work to expose a beating rock ‘n’ roll heart. Much of the eponymous album’s remarkable raw power comes courtesy of producer Frank Black, who in 2008 invited Yorn up to a Salem, Oregon studio for some spontaneous… Read more in Amazon's Pete Yorn Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

There’s nothing particularly wrong with Pete Yorn’s second album. It’s just that the effortless power-pop of Day I Forgot is pleasant enough but rarely distinctive or deep enough to demand close, repeated listens. Although it was reportedly recorded in a garage and Yorn’s multi-instrumental prowess is often supplemented here by a (fuller) band, the sonic results tend toward airbrushed studio perfection. Somewhere along the line Yorn has picked up an occasional Eddie Vedder vocal affectation. However, since Pearl Jam no longer deigns to write hits, somebody ought to show up on the radio with that voice, and "Come Back Home" could turn just such a trick. The best track here is "Crystal Village," one of those creamy pop confections easy to imagine as a teen TV show theme or prom-night favorite. Worst moment is a tie between a misguided bluesy stomp, "Carlos," and "Burrito," on which Yorn applies Vedder’s voice to the tale of a 7-Eleven romance started over a shared micro waved treat. It’s just a suggestion, but you may want to take yours to go. --Keith Moerer

Product Description

Day I Forgot, Yorn's sophomore effort, scales back the Smiths-influenced guitar work, scratchy-old-record sound effects, and delicate acoustic balladry in favor of a more straightforward approach. Columbia. 2003.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy follow-up to musicforthemorningafter!, July 1, 2003
By
This review is from: Day I Forgot (Audio CD)
I have seen several reviews writing off Day I Forgot as "an OK Pete Yorn CD, but not as good as musicforthemorningafter." This is truly not the case. It is different from the first CD, but the sign of any worthwhile artist is change and innovation.

There are some truly monumental and wondrous songs on here if you allow yourself to get past any "it's different from the last CD" stigma. From the opening single "Come Back Home" we have the core sampling of what good guitar-driven rock can sound like. Listen to the next single, "Crystal Village," to hear how beautifully crafted Pete Yorn's music and lyrics can deliver. There are so many subtle songs that seem unobtrusive on the first listen, then grab you a few months later until you are in your car tapping away at the steering wheel saying "Wow, that's a great song!" "Pass Me By" and "Committed" are perfect examples of that. Also be sure to check out the near perfect "Men In Uniform," featuring Peter Buck of R.E.M.

A great Pete Yorn album. As good as musicforthemorningafter?

Yes.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the "Day" you wake up "...The Morning After", June 12, 2003

..Musicforthemorningafter.....aw, what an album. Full of lyrics that reminded you of the good days with your ex. It gave you hope through the afternoon with "Murray" and "Black," and it made you sleep well with "EZ" and "On Your Side." ........

..Day I Forgot.....this is the album for when you wake up feeling great. Jump in the car and leave your town for a day while listening to "Come Back Home." Fall in love with your ex all over again with "Crystal Village" and "Burrito." OR Be carefree all over again with "Pass Me By," "Committed," and "Long Way Down." Slip into deep thought in the sun with "Turn off the Century" and "Man In Uniform." Think of the great day and fall asleep with "So Much Work."

This album isn't supposed to be ..Musicforthemorningafter..it's the album that makes you happy and carefree. Read and listen to what Pete has to say about this album on his website, you'll appreciate it more. New comers will like this one, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pete Yorn - Day I Forgot more like a....4 1/4, April 17, 2003
By

This review is from: Day I Forgot (Audio CD)
While I like Pete's first cd better, Day I Forgot is still a solid cd. It deserves a little more than 4 stars. He has more variety in his songs this time around and they are all good, but not all great. I skip 3 tracks when I listen: 'Commited','All at Once' and "So Much Work'; contrary to the first cd where I dont skip any songs at all. The standout songs on this cd include, 'Crystal Village', 'Carlos', and 'Man In Uniform', which has traces of musicforthemorningafter in it. But it should be said that no songs are BAD, theyre all average or above. I was hoping for the same kind of sound as his debut but as Pete said himself "you can only make a cd once". If you have musicforthemorningafter, buy this one. If you don't have his debut, get that. If you have the money, get both.
