A worthy follow-up to musicforthemorningafter!,
By
This review is from: Day I Forgot (Audio CD)
I have seen several reviews writing off Day I Forgot as "an OK Pete Yorn CD, but not as good as musicforthemorningafter." This is truly not the case. It is different from the first CD, but the sign of any worthwhile artist is change and innovation. There are some truly monumental and wondrous songs on here if you allow yourself to get past any "it's different from the last CD" stigma. From the opening single "Come Back Home" we have the core sampling of what good guitar-driven rock can sound like. Listen to the next single, "Crystal Village," to hear how beautifully crafted Pete Yorn's music and lyrics can deliver. There are so many subtle songs that seem unobtrusive on the first listen, then grab you a few months later until you are in your car tapping away at the steering wheel saying "Wow, that's a great song!" "Pass Me By" and "Committed" are perfect examples of that. Also be sure to check out the near perfect "Men In Uniform," featuring Peter Buck of R.E.M. A great Pete Yorn album. As good as musicforthemorningafter? Yes.

This is the "Day" you wake up "...The Morning After",

..Musicforthemorningafter.....aw, what an album. Full of lyrics that reminded you of the good days with your ex. It gave you hope through the afternoon with "Murray" and "Black," and it made you sleep well with "EZ" and "On Your Side." ..........Day I Forgot.....this is the album for when you wake up feeling great. Jump in the car and leave your town for a day while listening to "Come Back Home." Fall in love with your ex all over again with "Crystal Village" and "Burrito." OR Be carefree all over again with "Pass Me By," "Committed," and "Long Way Down." Slip into deep thought in the sun with "Turn off the Century" and "Man In Uniform." Think of the great day and fall asleep with "So Much Work." This album isn't supposed to be ..Musicforthemorningafter..it's the album that makes you happy and carefree. Read and listen to what Pete has to say about this album on his website, you'll appreciate it more. New comers will like this one, too.

Pete Yorn - Day I Forgot more like a....4 1/4,

While I like Pete's first cd better, Day I Forgot is still a solid cd. It deserves a little more than 4 stars. He has more variety in his songs this time around and they are all good, but not all great. I skip 3 tracks when I listen: 'Commited','All at Once' and "So Much Work'; contrary to the first cd where I dont skip any songs at all. The standout songs on this cd include, 'Crystal Village', 'Carlos', and 'Man In Uniform', which has traces of musicforthemorningafter in it. But it should be said that no songs are BAD, theyre all average or above. I was hoping for the same kind of sound as his debut but as Pete said himself "you can only make a cd once". If you have musicforthemorningafter, buy this one. If you don't have his debut, get that. If you have the money, get both.

I've always loved his songwriting and singing style. I love the way he wears his influences on his sleeve and just goes for it. I also love the mixing of acoustic and electric instruments. I heard some live boot in a used store last year and bought musicforthmorningafter on a whim. Great hard pop rock that sounds real and organic. Very refreshing to hear with all the ... to weed through in today's musical landscape. The ballads are cool too. To me, this album is an extension of his last. The only thing that ... is his record label. They re-released musicforthmorningafter with a bonus disc the same year it was released. ... marketing scheme. I have the bonus disc but I sure a hell didn't pay for the album again.Anyway, I think Yorn is pretty cool. I'm a big prog rock/jazz fusion fan who occasionally needs to cleanse his palette with great pop melodies and straight ahead rock guitar based stuff. This stuff is perfect. Great job on the follow up album. Nicely done, Pete.

Deserves a second look...,

I was turned on to Pete Yorn's music through MTV2 a few years ago, and picked up his musicforthemorningafter album while I was on vacation in Chicago. I listened to it for a little while afterwards, then threw it aside. About 18 months ago, I really started getting into artists like the Smiths and Velvet Underground, and one day I was browsing through my album collection, came across Yorn's debut, and popped it in. I fell in love with Yorn's music, and really started anticipating Day I Forgot. When it came out last year, I was disappointed at first listen. Day I Forgot lacks that sound that pulls you into the album. For musicforthemorningafter, it was the scratchy sound of the record player emitting Yorn's unique voice and guitar. At the time of Day's release, I could not get into the album. Now, a considerable amount of time since Day passed and much like with musicforthemorningafter, I have fallen in love with Yorn's music again, this time by accident. I clicked on the wrong song on my computer, and instead of getting a classic Yorn favorite "Black," from his first album, I heard "All At Once" from Day I Forgot. It is hands-down the best song I have ever heard, and the entire album has taken on a new meaning since then. I haven't heard another artist in weeks because there is no one whose music I can comletely emerse myself in like I can with Yorn. My advice is this: If you are reading this review right now, and felt disappointed with Day I Forgot at first listen, pick it back up, listen to "All At Once," and then try the album again. I think you will find something different--something more--than what you heard before.

Two years after his full of clarity pop and rock debut " Musicfromthemorningafter " Pete Yorn returns with the quitte similar yet equally enjoyable " Day I Forgot " . Fans of his first album will find many great tunes to cherish like the direct , powerfull " Commited " or the beautifully crafted " Pass Me By " . Yorn is surely a gifted singer-songwritter and once again his talent shines . He has a voice as crystal clear as his " Crystal Village " and then , there's this sense of confidence he sends out , a male gallantry of some sort yet never macho or pretentious .The only objection one can make is that he remains relatively static as an artist . He has a dilemma to face in the years to come : will he find a way to somehow develop his sound without sacrificing the qualities he has already revealed as a musician or will he stick to what he undeniably does great which is writing and perfoming powerfull , sensitive rock songs like " Strange Condition " or " Sense " ? And what will each path do to his career and fanbase ? In a time where a radical change of style and not moving forward can both cause serious damage to an artist's popularity it will be interesting to see what Yorn will do yet for now, enjoying his music is the best thing to do . His second work is simply great , a classy , well-written pop and rock offering that everyone should check out .

Can't Forget The Morning After... Or This Day,
By Sheila S. Antonio ((used to be in Guam)... Las Vgas, Nevada USA) - See all my reviews

First off, I apologize for the unoriginal title for my commentary. I haven't written one in more than 4 years. Oy. Now let's get right into the review...I first became a fan of Pete Yorn when I bought the "Me, Myself and Irene" soundtrack. His one song, "Strange Condition" was so unique and infectious that it became my only favorite track off the CD. Thanks to his official website (to my recollection, at that time it only had a mailing list and 4 or 5 sample tracks from his yet-to-released debut album), I was able to learn more about this young artist and I was convinced to buy his CD, 'musicforthemorningafter'. And I was not disappointed. First time listeners won't find Yorn's songs exactly groundbreaking but they will be impressed with the way he croons through his simple lyrics and catchy music. A good majority of his songs are sweet, down-to-earth pop love songs. The rest, although somewhat weak, are still addictive "fillers" for the album. Columbia Records was even kind enough to release a special edition of his successful debut. This included an extra CD which contains his live performance and/or covers of his favorite songs. In addition, there was also a remix of "Strange Condition" along with the music video. Yorn's sophomoric effort is slightly different to my ears. His sounds is more refined and rock-oriented. Surprisingly, only a small handful of his songs standout. His strongest tracks here are "Crystal Village", "Committed", "Long Way Down", "Turn Of The Century" and the strangely titled "Burrito", all of which are reminiscent of his first album. One odd thing about the album is the unlisted track #13, containing an unnoticeable 4 seconds of silence. Honestly, what is this? I think I can safely say that Pete Yorn avoided the dreaded sophomore jinx. I wish he incorporated more of his earlier work into this album though, like he did for "Turn Of The Century" (this track is actually a remixed version). Nonetheless, this is still a must have for Pete Yorn fans.

Day I Forgot is an awesome CD. Pete Yorn works his magic yet again. The CD is not as soft as musicforthemorningafter, it has a more of a rock touch to it and it works great. I bought the CD the day it came out and I have not stopped listening to it since. This is a great disc and is a great follow up to his first release. Buy it now!

pete comes back home,

When I first heard "musicforthemorningafter," I was definitely captivated by Pete Yorn's delicate attention to catchy pop-hooks, juxtaposed intelligent lyrics that demand the listener's full and undivided attention, and subtle studio / synth effects. The record was unique... evocative of so many emotions, and still so badass in a wise, young rockstar sort of way. It was honest. It was real music. So, obviously, I eagerly anticipated his new record with high hopes. Whereas "music..." was more of a compilation of fantastic songs, "Day I Forgot" is a sonic experience, and a uniformly composed work of art. It's one of those records you sit down and listen to from beginning to end, and you feel completely satisfied. Yorn's lyrics are ripe and pumping with the blood of nostalgia and rememberence or youth, and I don't know anyone who wouldn't identify with them on some level or another. The entire attitude of the record is so bittersweet it hurts. It's flippin' amazing, and if you're a human being with any appreciation for those subtle moments in life when you can't describe how warm you feel, then maybe you'll like this record as much as I do.

Pete feel's different the morning after,

I'll be the first to admit that I really like Pete Yorn. His first LP ,"MusicForTheMorningAfter", has spent extensive time in my disc changer. I even went out and bought the Limited Edition Release of "MusicForTheMorningAfter" so I could hear more of Pete. I had huge hopes for the guy. I still do. Now "Day I Forgot" is an OK follow up to what I feel was an as close to classic as you could be. Yorn throws some music that sounds like the old stuff, emo-rock with some ballads that can water your eyes if you forget to blink. His one man bad studio output is great and seems like it returns well."Come Back Home" is my personal favorite and is what I believe is his first single of the record, a worthy choice. Overall, I like "Day I Forgot" as much as I loved the third Godfather movie, it wasn't that good but, hey, it's the Godfather. I feel that Yorn will be with us for a while, he has this enigmatic sense that makes him likeable.
