A powerful oratorio that fits no sterotyped mold, December 16, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Day of Judgment (Audio CD)
Telemann's later passions and oratorios are powerful, unorthodox works largely unknown till published editions were released from the the Kassel Telemann Archive compilation effort begun after World War II. I own two other renditions of Der Tag des Gerichts, Rheinische Kantorei & Nicolaus Harnoncourt and am just buying this one, so I shouldn't be rating the CD (they forced me to rate or I couldn't submit the review). Telemann's chorales melt me no matter who does them - and judging from the clips the Wikman chorus and soloists are excellent. The big questions relate to whether you like "authentic instrument" performance, which this version appears to be. I prefer full-blooded modern instruments because I think that historic performance trivializes Telemann's gift for unique instrumental effects and harmonies. But we'll see.
