Book Description

7 and up2 and upTyndale Kids
Popular children's author Karyn Henley, author of The Beginner's Bible, has created a unique tool to help children establish Bible-reading habits for a lifetime—with an investment of just seven minutes per day.

In this revised version of God's Story, daily Bible readings lead readers ages seven and up through the Scriptures in just one year. The Day by Day Kid's Bible bridges the gap between a Bible storybook and a full-text Bible since the Scriptures are simplified for young readers. New features include dated Bible readings for every day of the year, two-color interior, and full-color pictorial time line of events.

4.0 out of 5 stars kid' reading the bible and loving it????, November 15, 2002
This review is from: Day by Day Kid's Bible: The Bible for Young Readers (Tyndale Kids) (Hardcover)
this is a great book to get children, I'll say 2nd to 5th grade, to read and understand important stories in the bible. It is a day by day reader that should take around 7 to 10 minutes depending on reading skills. there are some illustrations to break up the copy. stories that might appear in different chapters are combined and told in one chapter with references to other chapters. violence and sexual stories are removed/kept to a minimum. Something to consider... GOd is always referred to with a male pronoun. Great indices in the back for referencing stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little graphic for my 7 year old, January 13, 2011

This review is from: Day by Day Kid's Bible: The Bible for Young Readers (Tyndale Kids) (Hardcover)
My six and seven year old boys have finished their story Bibles, and I thought this would be too dry for them, but decided to give it a try anyway. Surprisingly, they love it, and when I tried to go back to the story Bible they objected strongly, wanting to go back to the "day-by-day". However, I am disappointed that a Bible marketed to 7-10 year olds includes some of the things it does. I guess I shouldn't have been - after all the description clearly states that it includes the entire Bible, just reworded to an appropriate reading level, and omitting (pg xi) "...sexual scenes, and graphic violence." When the ten commandments came up number seven says, "Have sex only with your wife or husband" to which my seven year old immediately asked, "what's sex?" I simply stated that sex is what mommies and daddies do to make a baby, and he seemed satisfied and moved on. I think perhaps that at seven they're not ready for the whole Bible. I do like this Bible. So far it is true to scripture (unlike some of the other story Bibles I've come across). The language is clear and concise, though it lacks the flow and beauty you would expect from a story Bible. So I would not put this in a category with story Bibles. But neither is it a translation. I guess its more like the Amplified Bible (from what I understand - I haven't read the Amplified).

My kids seemed to miss the implication, but I was wondering if the story of Joseph and the "Captain's" wife was going to bring up questions. She writes, "Now the captain's wife saw that Joseph was very handsome, so she said to Joseph, 'Come and be like a husband to me!' But Joseph wouldn't... She took hold of Joseph's coat. 'Come and be like a husband to me!' she said. Joseph ran out of the house. He left his coat in her hands. Then the captain's wife called her servants. 'See this?' she said. 'Joseph came in here to be like a husband to me. But I called for help. Then he ran off in a hurry.'" It is a difficult story to tell to this young of a crowd. "Come and be like a husband to me" is certainly awkward phrasing, but I don't think that "kiss me" is quite right either, which is how I've seen it in some story Bibles.

I guess just think about whether your child is ready for the whole Bible. There's some pretty gruesome stuff in there, and some of the Old Testament acts of God are pretty harsh. My son broke down in tears when we read the story MORE TRAVELS, pg 74-75, "But two of Aaron's sons did not obey God. They put fire in their offering bowls. It was fire that God had not told them to use. So fire came from God and burned up Aaron's two sons." I was thinking, "yikes", and I look up and he's bawling. I asked what was wrong and he said God killed them "for just a little thing." So we had a talk about how sin is sin, no matter how small, but Jesus died so that we can be forgiven for all sins. In all I suppose a good conversation. But he was pretty shaken.

Just be aware of what you're getting into. Be sure your kids are ready.

5.0 out of 5 stars Day by Day Bible, March 1, 2009
This review is from: Day by Day Kid's Bible: The Bible for Young Readers (Tyndale Kids) (Hardcover)
As a children's minister I love to encourage families to read the Bible together. The Day by Day Kids Bible is the perfect Bible for the entire family. 7 minutes a day to read the entire Bible through in a year is a great challenge for each family. Today I passed out ten more Bibles to families who want to accept the challenge and read through the Bible in one year. That makes 25 families so far and I expect!
