Book Description

October 18, 2005
DESCRIPTION: From the authors of sisters and 50 of the world's greatest women photographers

On April 8, 2005, 50 of the world's most talented female photographers spent 24 hours capturing a "day in the life" of American women. The result is a rich tapestry reflecting the full spectrum of women's lives: their daily challenges, their joys and accomplishments, and their changing roles in the family, the workplace, and the community. The images reflect how women see themselves, as well as the unexpected, dramatic, and sometimes humorous moments revealed during the course of an average day.

The more than 200 memorable photographs include portraits by Sharon J. Wohlmuth. A dozen essay-length personal profiles by Carol Saline, narrative captions and extended quotes provide a context for the lives reflected in each picture. From the well-known to the unknown, the women portrayed embody the many incarnations of the American woman. Their stories, conveyed in the intimate, resonant style of Wohlmuth and Saline's Sisters, speak to women of all backgrounds.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Fifty of the nation's most renowned female photographers worked exclusively on portraits of American women as they pursued their daily activities on April 8, 2005. Collating these extraordinary color photographs, the authors of the acclaimed Sisters (1994) and Mothers & Daughters (1997)offer a unique perspective on the individual and collective lives of a diverse spectrum of American women. As women of all races and backgrounds across the country are photographed at home, at work, at play, on the town, at mealtime, and at bedtime, a vibrant tapestry reflective of the entirely unique persona ofeach woman emerges. Enhanced by essays and quotes, these photographs provide a stunning visual window into the heart and soul of American womanhood. Margaret Flanagan

Not your average coffee table photo book; not only were the photos of women great, but the stories captured the essence of the subjects. I couldn't stop reading it; the essays were wonderful and inspiring. I bought a second copy for my daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars American Woman, October 17, 2005
This review is from: A Day in the Life of the American Woman: How We See Ourselves (Hardcover)
One of the greatest books ever published, not only did it give me insight into my own world as a woman in today's society, but it also opened my eyes to how much we as women have accomplished in the past few years. I would recommend this book for every woman in America, and also there was just a great review in People magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a coffee table book, November 18, 2005
This review is from: A Day in the Life of the American Woman: How We See Ourselves (Hardcover)
Too often the lives of woman are told from perspectives that make us look at the perspective and not the woman. The life stories of the women featured in this amazing book are the women we walk past, sit on the bus with and nod to every day. More than photos, this book takes us into the lives of women whose primary task everyday is to keep moving forward.

No matter their beginnings or pasts, every woman in this book teaches us yet again about the unwavering perseverance of women.

An outstanding book.
