Funky blues at their finest,
By A Customer
This review is from: Day in the Life of a Bluesman (Audio CD)
Jackie Payne's rich, sexy and supple tenor voice has an undertone of grittyness that is perfect for this material. These are definately the funky blues - great guitar work by Kenny "Blue" Ray, good arrangements and the Hammond Organ supplies a lot of energy. Jackie's sound ranges from vintage Otis Redding & Bobbie Blue Bland to soul-blues like Johnny Taylor but his sound is definately his own. Killer band, makes you want to jump and shout. These guys should be much better known.

Jackie Payne infuses the Blues with Soul,

I saw Jackie Payne & Kenny "Blue" Ray perform once and have one of their earlier CDs. I thought they were pretty much a local talent. Regardless of where you live, you should get to know this duo. Jackie Payne's singing reminds me of Bobby Bland and whether slowing it down or going up tempo, he injects soul into each song. Kenny "Blue" Ray produced this CD, as well as played guitar, and the combination of his guitar playing and Payne's vocals make this a CD that doesn't really have a bad track on it.
