Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 32p. (Day in the Life of Series). CIP. Troll. 1987. PLB $10.79; pap. $2.50. Grade 1-5 Following people for an entire day as they go about their business gives a pretty good idea of what their jobs are like. That is just what the au thors of this series did, presenting a variety of occupations in picture book format, illustrated with colorful photo graphs. The subjects are presented as enjoying their jobs, although some of the drawbacks of each occupation are mentioned. Only one of these five ti tles, . . . Construction Foreman, fails to give a clear understanding of the occupation that it discusses. The job is just too varied and complex to come across clearly in this slice-of-life for mat. In general, there is not much background on the education and training required for each occupation, nor any mention of how each occupa tion affects the family life of each per son, especially in the case of the cross-country trucker, the commercial fisherman who fishes for two weeks at a time, and the disc jockey on a 1 to 10 p.m. shift. These criticisms aside, these books are valuable in introduc ing the daily life of people in occupa tions one might not otherwise be able to observe first-hand. Deirdre R. Murray, Pine Road School, Hunting don Valley, Pa.
