5.0 out of 5 stars Loving shower gift for adoptive parents
This is my favorite book about adoption. I found myself in tears when I finished the book. The text is simple but speaks directly to the heart. The parents narrate all the concrete steps they took the day they receive the call to pick up their new baby. The crayon illustrations convey a beautiful sense of warmth and love. Both children and adults will find themselves...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
We were excited to order this book after reading the other reviews. We have two adopted children - the oldest is now 4 and the youngest is 1 1/2. We were VERY disappointed. In its 33 pages, the book provided some nice art and a couple of nice sentiments in its 150 words - but nothing more. While less may be more, there wasn't much value in this book for us. We would...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Day We Met You, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
This book closely mirrored our own adoption experience. Family and friends were a big part and the book includes it in a very simple and friendly way. I love it and my daughter loves it.

This is story is simple and beautifully written. It is a wonderful way to introduce the concept of adoption to the very youngest adoptees.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great springboard for discussion, November 17, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Day We Met You, The (Hardcover)
After hearing this story (which is told in the voices of the adoptive parents), our 3 year old daughter asked (again!) to hear her own adoption story. Sharing stories about the different ways children join families is a great way to begin a lifelong discussion with your child about adoption.

5.0 out of 5 stars Less is more, October 28, 2000
This is a beautiful, simple, and sweet story, very well told and illustrated. I agree with a previous writer that the great adoption book is yet to be written, but as sheer poetry and as an upbeat, positive message, this is one of the best books out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to see a children's book on Domestic Adoption, October 16, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The majority of the children's books I find seem to focus on international adoption. This book met my needs much better. It is very simplistic but that is a positive to me, since I began reading this book to my son when he was only a year old. It is a great way to start introducing adoption into your everyday vocabulary.

Although the sentiment in this book is simple, I have found it to be a good catalyst for discussion about adoption. The details don't match in all repects to our adoption, but we are able to supplement our own changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars What do people expect?, March 4, 2007

I do not understand what people expect? This book was one of teh best (and we bought many) books to help my daughter understan dteh adoption process - it was teh only one which didn't involve teh birth mother which is something that can be introduced later when they are little older...

Though my daughter is from India (not domestic) it still works - children are not so literal to think a car seat means that you literally got a car seat.

4 years later it is still one of her favourite bed time stories and has helped us introduce teh concept of adoption very easily. I reccoemnd it to all new adoptive parents adopting small children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly for domestic adoption, July 10, 2006
This a very generic story, but it does seem to be largely focused on domestic adoption. The basic idea is that they get a phone call to go get "you" (the baby)... then the pages are full of different things that they bought or borrowed to get ready... then "we" went off to get "you"... It implies a speedy adoption from phone call to becoming a family, although the implication isn't overly strong. For example, they borrowed a car seat to take the baby home. There are no mentions of airplanes or long waits. It's a nice general story though. But definitely focused on adopting a baby.
