4.0 out of 5 stars Will the General Public please wise up., June 13, 2002
By John Bounds (los angeles, california United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is my second review of this album. My first never got posted for some reason. It was glowing in a d.i.y. sort of way, but I digress. I love the Deathray Davies. Infinitely catchy and always smile making. "Day of the Ray" makes straight for the pogo boom boom stomp of 'Is this on" in their own unique but user friendly way. Think of the Dandy Warhols(without the drone baggage) but with a sunnier dispositon and a darker soul. For all the snare pop gloss there is some informative words at work here. It takes several listenings to get past thesheer feel goodness of the tracks. I find no filler here. I immediately gravitated to "Persuasive is her name" and "Her First Party" which screams "Make me the next single". Then I discovered the pop greatness of "Starting to Pop". The Deathray's really got me goin' now. And I thought they wouldn't be able to top their last batch of tunes these talented Texans do not disappoint! Now if only NME and the brits will grab ahold and overhype...

4.0 out of 5 stars quite good, November 3, 2002
By indianastan (Evansville, IN USA) - See all my reviews
I look forward to more from this band. It's a retro sound, but I expect these guys to have more staying power than other recent "retro" bands, ie, the Hives, because of the quality of the writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Energetic fun 90s pop, February 19, 2003
I wish there was a half star system available here. This album deserves it. This album is a solid three and half star release. Much to recommend it but just not there. On music alone it is a four star release. But the lyrics are sort of weak. Don't get me wrong, they sound great but on the page, they are slightly lacking. This album is about how it feels not how it looks. I also like the knowing but not slavish debt to the 60s (Yes, they own some Elephant Six records!).

Another downside, I think the album is too short. Granted with the other deficit on the album, I appreciate the "get in, do what you gotta, and split" feel of the album.

I don't want this review to sound like a slag. I think the band is in the ballpark. Next release, I will be there. There is an enthusiasm here which puts this over the top. I haven't felt this way since the slouching towards greatness debut of Starlight Mints. It grows on you! Better than radio pop but just not as good as Beulah's Heartstrings.
