Now's "the day " to buy this!,
By
This review is from: Day (Audio CD)
I bought this cd on the strength of an Amazon advert on the site something about "country music that doesn't [stink]" or "Texan songwriters". Anyway this is the best CD I have bought in a long time. It rocks pretty much from start to finish with a country Steve Earl type edge to it. It is also a bit "southern rockish" like Lynnrd Sknnrrd/ Outlaws which I also like. That said these guys are their own men, write their own stuff, are in their twenties and the sound is all their own no matter how you compare their influences. There is no weak track here and the best compliment I can pay is that I have ordered everything else they have done. Hopefully it will not be that long before the next CD appears.

Reckless Kelly does it again,
By A Customer
This review is from: Day (Audio CD)
From the first song to the last, "The Day" grabs you by the short hairs and doesn't let go. "The Day" is further evidence of Reckless Kelly's ability to knock you on your derriere with a song. Those of you who have not heard it before will be pleasantly surprised how well a country-flavored fiddle and a haunting mandolin compliment a muscular bass and a sizzling electric guitar. The result is a unique sound - one that defies pigeon-holing but one that is exceptionally listenable and leaves you craving more."The Day" rocks a little harder than the band's previous CDs, "Millican" and "Live at Stubbs," but displays the same musical diversity, from the raw, driving intensity of "Floodwater" to the more traditional country feel of "What Would You Do." As expected, the harmonies are tight; the shading of Willy's, Cody's and Chris's voices is amazing - it is simultaneously impenetrable and distinct, subtle and slap-you-in-the-face. The melodies and lyrics, all original, are strong, and the musicianship is solid. If you're looking for a fresh new sound, check out Reckless Kelly - they'll quickly become your favorite band.

The original music in this album is truly visual. I can see Crazy Eddie... I highly recommend this album to those of you who enjoy a little Texas style alternative country rock! The album starts out hot and ends on fire!

RKs The Day reveals the band's musical maturation,
By halby (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Day (Audio CD)
The first CD from Reckless Kelly Records (RKs 3rd) seems to have something for everyone. A couple of almost balladesque songs and a couple that lean more toward the rocking side of what the band calls their "hick rock" sound. Regardless, every song has that Reckless Kelly touch. Willie writes some great (some sad and some hilarious) lyrics about heartache from both sides of the coin, all to that great RK sound.

downhill,
By A Customer
This review is from: Day (Audio CD)
sadly, this is some pretty derivative stuff. granted, it's better than most of what comes out of Nashville, to be sure, but that's not exactly saying much these days. this band hit its peak with the Millican debut album, and the stuff since seems to have gotten weaker. They seem to have lost a lot of their original sound with the departure of their original guitarist, (although jon dee graham was a capable session guitarist on this one).the recording itself is especially murky, enough so to make this a pretty annoying listen. to say it's not a warm disc is a bit of an understatement. in short -- save your money, and instead of buying this one, grab millican, or grab some uncle tupelo/son volt/jay farrar stuff (which seems to have inspired these guys, at least early on). |
