4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced and leaves you wanting more... February 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Flora is three days from the age of 21 and her day of sacrifice. Supernatural families offer up their first born in public sacrifice ceremonies to appease the gods and curry their favor. Flora is caught in the cross hairs when a rival family puts a hit out on her. From there the action is very fast paced. Her guardian angel reveals a deep betrayal that makes her question her whole reason for being.

Day of Sacrifice is a very quick read. It presents a very interesting world with a new spin on YA paranormal romance. I particularly enjoyed the strength of Flora's character in standing up to her father and those out to kill her. She definitely is not an annoying passive female lead.

I do wish DOS had been a bit longer and maybe a little more fleshed out as a longer novel, but it does seem to be set up well for book 2 in the series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Short to really work well January 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Day of Sacrifice: The Prophecy (Day of Sacrifice Stories #1) by S. W. Benefiel

(Discloser: I received this eBook free in order to write a review)

Summary:
Flora is approaching her twenty first birthday. That is normally an exciting time for a young woman, but Flora isn't normal. She is the first born in her family and, therefore, is the family sacrifice to the Gods. Her entire life has lead up to the day of her death. Her sacrifice ensures the Gods blessings on her family. Flora is a bit of a rebelled but she knows her duty. She pushes the limits to the fullest extent but she knows what will happen on her birthday. Her pure body (she's a virgin) will be sacrificed to the Gods.

My thoughts: (Some spoilers)
For a short story, this novella was packed with a lot of story. An entire background was given for a society that contains supernatural beings (witches, werewolves, and vampires) as well as lowly humans. Included with the background for the story, a short tale was included. While I think that the background information was well done, I'm not sure that the characters were as well developed. The story happened very fast and I was unclear why chances were taken. Some of it seemed very convenient to the story. The idea of sacrifices was clearly disliked by many characters in the story but it seems that it has gone on for quite a few years. Such ingrained tradition doesn't get challenged on a whim. There just wasn't enough story invested to make any kind of changes. Clearly, I am implying that there is a challenge to the idea but I won't say any more about it.

Personally, the book was too graphic with too many uses of the F word but if those things don't bother you, then you may like this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Chapters...Not a Book April 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Both the first and second "books" in this series are well written and draw you in. However, neither one is a complete story. "Day of Sacrifice" is simply the first set of chapters in a larger story. Part 2, "Rebellion" doesn't resolve the short-story or the long story either. If you're considering reading Day of Sacrifice, wait until the series (really the novel) is complete and then purchase all the parts at once. Reading this bit on its own was simply frustrating.

just 3 days before she is to be a virgin sacrificed to the gods someone puts a hit on her. The sexy guardian angel of her friend saves her then tells her that she is not the first born but there is a prophecy that says she and another fire witch will join and stop the sacrifices once and for all.

long winded... written in circles... I don't even want to think of the omnibus ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Something a little different March 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I won't go into details about what the story is about seeing that there's a synopsis above, but I was happy to find that it was a different kind of paranormal concept. While there are vamps and weres and angels and witches, the whole sacrifice part was an interesting new twist.

A quick engaging read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Day of Sacrifice begins January 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Flora is a sacrifice. Julian is her new guardian. It is 3 days until her big Day of Sacrifice. She is being hunted instead. Will Julian protect her for the benefit of her family or together will they change the world?

This short novella takes place in a paranormal world where families sacrifice their first born in a very public ritual to the gods in order to keep their powers. Some very interesting questions are posed. What would you sacrifice to gain ultimate power? Would you submit yourself to ruin for the benefit of those you love? Try to save yourself at great costs to those you love? Or facing the toughest decision of your life, attempt a third, more risky option in order to change not just your life, but the world?

This is the first book in a series and although action-packed and filled with romance it does feel a bit like we've just gotten started here. We've learned about the world, the prophecy, we've read about a budding romance, and some tough decisions, but the plot doesn't progress any further and we are left wondering...what happens next? I'll be reading the next one for sure and expect that with time much more will reveal itself to entice and pull me deeper into the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars First book in a series of four April 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Day Of Sacrifice by S.W. Benefiel
Book 1
In the world of the supernaturals they have been giving their first born up so their family can prosper. When the first born hits their 21st birthday...it's all over. Flora Hamilton is three days away and it looks like her last days are going to tough ones. Her friend Aiden is dying today, she ticked her Guardian off and has been left alone...which is a big no no...her twin sister has been trying to get hold her all night because there is a hit out for Flora. So it looks like she is on the run and at the moment alone.

Julian is happy that Aiden is the last sacrifice he had to guard. It's too hard walking them to their death. He's ready to go back to his family's homestead and relax...only it looks like one more sacrifice needs saving before she dies in three days. What could he do but grab the beautiful Flora and bring her to safety...or is being with him not so safe?

This is a free book. It's a quick read and just the opening for the next books in the series:
Rebellion, Dormant and Takeover.
**Sensual situations and language.
