Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 7^-12. On June 30, 1908, a "fireball explosion" appeared to rip the sky apart over Siberia and then devastate a massive area of remote wilderness where the native Tungus people made their home. The Tunguska meteorite, as it is typically known, has fascinated scientists for decades. Gallant visited the area of the explosion in 1992 and here carefully examines what he calls the "cosmic mystery" --the meteorite theory having never actually been proved. Might the phenomenon have had a more exotic cause, such as a black hole or antimatter? Gallant reports on several options and covers the exhaustive work that previous scientists have devoted to the Tunkusga event. Fine writing and careful explanations of research findings distinguish this book. The last two chapters, on the possibilities of cosmic missiles hitting the earth, are particularly fascinating. Black-and-white photos; bibliography. Anne O'Malley

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing source of information!, January 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Day the Sky Split Apart: Investigating a Cosmic Mystery (Library Binding)
I was writing a report on Tunguska for my ninth grade semester science project, and was low on information. After visiting Gallant's web site, I found he had wrote this book and ordered it. The amount of information in it was incredible! There are accounts that have never been published before, diagrams and photos, a full description of the expeditions to the area; all this added to the report, strengthening every section. I would recommend this to anyone interested in astronomy.
