Rebecca Bayliss is a young London woman working in a book shop. As her mother is dying, she tells Rebecca about the family in Cornwall that she has never known. Rebecca travels to the estate of her grandfather, a once-famous artist, to inform him of the death of his only daughter. Rebecca is a thorougly likeable heroine and is surrounded by a cast of well-defined secondary characters from the cousins to the aunt to the butler. Although written before her more famous novel, "The Shell Seekers," many of the enticing elements of that book are found here---the description of the beach at Cornwall, the artist's studio, and the enigmatic young man who has a profound influence on the main character. This is a most satisfying read for all and a definite must for those of us who can never get enough of Rosamunde Pilcher.

This was the first book of Pilcher's that I have read, she is a very talented writer. The confused and very human caracter, was easy to feel sympathic towards, as she struggles to find out about her recently discoverd family. She digs deep into the family's past, uncovering many deep and unforgotten angers. As all this is happening, she herself is trying to decide what this means to her, she has a family now but will it be one for long?

The Day of the Storm was a thoroughly enjoyable expirence, an unforgetable novel. I could not put the book down, it makes you want to find out just like she does.

A journey through someone elses life is always a good escape.

After a very unconventional upbringing, Rebecca Bayliss has found bliss in her dull life working in a London book shop and living in a solitary flat she is slowly furnishing. For once she is in control of her life, and quite content. But her mother's latest lover writes that her mother is dying, and Rebecca must hurry to Ibiza. There Rebecca finally learns of her family in Cornwall and the famous artist grandfather she's never known but whom she feels compelled to inform of his daughter's death. The story is full of unusual coincidences (sometimes called fate?) and makes several abrupt turns before reaching a surprise of an ending. While Pilcher lavishly paints the background of her books, a map would have really been lovely in this one.

First of all, I love Rosemund Pilcher. The main characters in her stories are all so good and sweet (I know, this one did have a villain) AND her books always have happy endings. Sometimes, when I want to escape into a good book, I want a fairy tale and DAY OF THE STORM is definitely a fairy tale. This book is such easy reading--I read it on the airplane--very easy to get into. Pilcher is the best when it comes to character development and while reading this story, you will come to love Grenville, Joss, and especially Rebecca.

I thought I had read every one of Rosamunde Pilcher's masterpieces but I recently came upon "The Day Of The Storm" and was happy to have another chance to relish in another Pilcher novel.

I found that I couldn't put the book down once I began reading it and so neglected things I needed to get done. Once again, the story is brilliantly told with interesting characters and a fascinating plot.

I'll keep searching just in case I've missed another Pilcher creation and hopefully I'll find one.

This is the third R. Pilcher book I have read. I so enjoyed the Shell Seekers and Winter Soltice . I am afraid this book was a let down for me. It has beautiful descriptions of the countryside , which I love. But the book did not pull me into the lives of her characters as the other two books did. I will now try September and hope to have another good read !

This is not only my favorite Rosamunde Pilcher novel, but one of my favorite novels of all time. In it, 21 year old Rebecca Bayliss searches for her estranged relatives shortly after her mother's death. On the way to her relatives, she meets a mysterious stranger, Joss Gardner, an attractive young man who at first seems almost like her stalker, but winds up being her hero. The descriptions of Cornwall are breathtaking. There was just one disturbing scene to me, when her cousin kissed her dead on the mouth and when she tried to get away, he grabbed her and slapped her. Luckily she was a strong enough young woman to not put up with that or fear him. You will fall in love with all the characters in this book. Well, maybe not the violent cousin, but everyone else. Buy a copy off amazon today. You won't regret it. I think this book appeals mainly to young women. I fell in love with it at 22.

After reading September and Coming Home, this was a real letdown. The characters were not well enough defined to show the motivation for their behavior. I never believed anything they said or did. It read, to me, like a Reader's Digest version of what she could have written. This won't discourage me, however, from continuing to explore her books, as the others were most enjoyable.

She hasn't seen her mother for 2 years and is shocked at the change in her, she is dying from leukemia. There Rebecca finally learns of her family in Cornwall and the famous artist grandfather she's never known but whom she feels compelled to inform of his only daughter's death.

A moving and enthralling story I highly recommend it.

I just finished this book and altho I found it easy reading and enjoyable I just didn't feel like I was reading a Rosamunde Pilcher book. It felt like a light romance novel by someone else. There is so much depth to the Shell Seekers and September and Winter Solstice and I didn't see it here. I wasn't actually disappointed because I was in the mood for light romance but it just felt like one of the Victoria Holt type romances. I adore Rosamunde Pilcher's the Shell Seekers and have the audiobook and video both. I will continue to read her books because like I said I adore her writing usually.
