Wonderful Children's Book. Only somewhat like "Meet the Robinsons",

I was afraid that my kids would not resonate to this book after expectations that it was the Meet the Robinsons book. That was not the case. My children love this book and have repeatedly asked to have it read at bedtime. There are similarities in the book to the movie, but the overall plot is quite different. The differences are quite enjoyable. It's a much simpler story, so it works better at bedtime and with a wider age range of children. The author and illustrator also created Rolie Polie Olie and the book has the same retro- cartoon style. The artwork is quite endearing. Would love to have some of the illustrations to hang on the wall.

As a writer I know how difficult it is to create a story for children that appeals to them on their own level without talking down to them. It is, like comedy, one of the most challenging nuts to crack.
As an illustrator, the same is true. William Joyce is one of those very rare talents who not only manages to do both these things masterfully but also in such a way as to make it all look so easy. If he had done no other books beyond A DAY WITH WILBUR ROBINSON he would have easily cemented his position as one of the finest creators of fantasy for children along with such luminaries as Milne, Sendak, Barrie and Seuss. But he didn't stop here. He has a library of stellar works, each as beautifully executed as this and each as personal and yet different from the rest. You will enjoy this book if you are a human being. Five stars.

Great big W's and Terrific Pictures!,
This review is from: A Day with Wilbur Robinson (Hardcover)
'A Day with Wilbur Robinson' by William Joyce is about a funny story. The boys go looking for Grandfather Robinson and his teeth. They meet some weird people along the way.My favorite parts were the big W's drawn as part of the words. I really liked the pictures. I think kids age 4 - 8 would like it. I think both boys and girls would like it. I give it 5 stars. Reviewed by Young Mensan Eliot, age 5

We ordered this story book right after we bought and viewed "Meet the Robinsons," which we thoroughly enjoyed! I then had the opportunity to enjoy reading this story (on which the movie was based) to my 4-year old little boy. What a great story line ... what a great concept ... what an imagination! My kiddo got more excited with every page and the illustrations were incredible. I am now an official William Joyce fan. We look forward to enjoying many more of his creations in the future!

I purchased this book after my four year old fell in love with Disney's "Meet the Robinsons." You will find most of the family members from the film in the book it was based on, but that's where the similarity ends. We enjoy the original as much as the film version, which makes it an excellent choice for any young reader (or listener), and I strongly recommend it.

This is the book that inspired the movie "Meet the Robinsons" but don't expect it to be the same stories. Similar characters, great illustrations and a fun story, but don't make the mistake of selling it to your kids as "the Meet the Robinson's" book. Just let it stand on its own and they'll recognize the characters if they've seen the movie.

The book was too complicated for my toddlers so it ended up being very boring for them. You'll recognize some parts of the story from "Meet the Robinsons"; it's not the same story-line though. It was cute, but I got a little bored with it myself.

Wonderful art, brief text, and inventive themes. If you've seen the movie, it will read like a re-envisioning of the animated film as a "Find what's wrong with this picture" book. A treasure!!!

Good, but where are the inventive women?,

First off, my son loves this book. He's 3 1/2 and he has wanted it to be read to him before night time and nap time for the past week. That means that it's up there.
It's a neat book that looks like it takes place in the 20's. Basically, it's two boys wandering around the Robinson Estate, and they are looking for Grandpa and his false teeth. The different pages tell of encounters with different family members. I don't really think of myself as a radical, but they mainly meet male members of the family who are inventing something or doing something cool. Women are mentioned a few times. The sisters are talking on the phone and trying on their prom dress. The grandmother is helping the grandfather. The mom is helping the dad. And at the end there is a lively reading of tarzan by the mom. But I was left wanting to read about someone like a wacky aunt who just got back from Africa or some woman with a little vigor. |
