More About the Author

Charles G. West, author of historical/westerns, arrived on the western literary scene in March, 1998 with a novel entitled STONE HAND. Since then West has written forty-one western novels, published by The Penguin Group under their Signet imprint. STONE HAND was not the author's first published book, however. That distinction goes to a medical thriller entitled THE TENANT.

West's love affair with the Big Sky Country began when he was a child, reading the works of authors like A.B. Guthrie and Vardis Fisher. When finally given the opportunity to write his own version of the Great American Western, he strived to write with honesty about the hardships and dangers faced by the men and women who forged our western frontier. To remain true to this resolve, a great deal of time must be invested in research of people, places, and events. Protagonists are often called upon to perform heroically, but the author insists they must be believable. His next book will be on the shelves in December 2012.

West currently lives in Ocala, FL with his wife, portrait artist, Ronda West, whose name is found on the dedication page of every West novel.

I started reading Charles West Westerns about a year ago after looking for a new western writer in the same likeness of Louis L'Amour. A writer that is authentic, a good story teller and clear morality about what is right and wrong. In my opinion Mr. West has not only meet these expectations in the story telling of L'Amour but also in the character dynamics of a Ernest Haycox. I read many genres of fiction from SF to thrillers and mystery but I find that a good Charles West western on an easy Sunday afternoon is a good alternative and a fun read.

In the Day of the Wolf the main character struggles to reconcile the ways of his Indian nature and his white birth against outlaws unbeknownst to him that want him dead. His naivety and lack of experience with women reflect the romantic story line.
In this story he meets up with 3 prostitutes and reluctantly becomes their protector on a journey that pits Wolf's experience and skill against Indians and the outlaw family that want to vent their revenge.

Mr. West has succeeded in writing good stories without the moral shallowness or lack of conscience of many of todays contemporary writers. So I have been prompted to write my first ever review in hopes that Mr West will continue to provide the type of good captivating stories that I have now associated with his writing.

Charles West is a very good western novelist whose stories move forward and hold the reader's interet. they don't become boring .
An eleven-year-old boy finds himself stranded in the Rocky Mountains, survives, and becomes known as somewhat of a ghost especially to
the Indians of the mountain region. His enigmatic character is very strong, and he becomes known as " Wolf " because of the similarity
of his strength and ingenuity to the illusive animal. When "Wolf" finds three soiled doves making their way through the mountains to
a military post, their wagon stuck in a stream, he helps them and then guides them on to their destination. From this "civilized"
place, the story really begins, and there is plenty of action until the end of the novel. A U.S. Marshal, outlaws, indians, and Rose, one of the doves' deep feeling for "Wolf", make for excellent reading. I have read all of Charles West's novels. I will read all to come !

Wolf is an orphan at age 11. He teaches himself how to survive in the wilderness, and a Crow Village helps him further his wilderness education.

On his way to Fort Laramie to buy a few supplies, he comes across a wagon stuck in the river with three prostitutes in need of help. I will not tell you any more. Find out for yourself.

Mr. West is well versed in the English language as well as using correct punctuation (two things I check out immediately when I start reading a new book).

I hope Mr. West continues writing books for many years to come. A suggestion I have for Mr. West is to do a second or third publication of his older books which are now costing a huge amount of money for used paperbacks.

Good read. It is hard to imagine a person could be so unwieldy but Wolf was. I enjoyed this book because it ended well. Hope you enjoy it.
