4.0 out of 5 stars "One Nation, One Faith", August 27, 2006

This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
A very pleasant surprise, Day of Wrath brings to the screen the story of a sheriff in a small Spanish town as he tries to get to the bottom of an ongoing series of brutal and highly mysterious murders.
The setting is Spain in 1542 and a small town sheriff, recently back from Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands, finds himself at a loss when confronted with several murders that no one seems to acknowledge, not even the victims' spouses! Little does he know that he is in the middle of an intriguing civil war...
Christopher Lambert, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
Blanca Marsillach was delightful as Carmen de Jaramillo; let's see more of her...
Very well written and very well presented, the movie is one that can be watched over and over again.
The setting, the plot, the costumes, and the music are all wonderful, though the battle sequences could have been better.
In short, Day of Wrath is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Medieval Mystery, December 6, 2006
This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
This medieval mystery has many twists, so pay close attention to the details. It's an excellent spell-binder that trots along at a fast pace with plenty of suspense. 'Who done it and why' is the big question when royals suddenly drop dead during the night due to some nasty wounds and various letters of the alphabet carved into their flesh. Before the befuddled sheriff can get a witness, the bodies disappear! Is the sheriff drinking too much and imagining all the blood and guts, or is there a conspiracy involving a secret list of names? Excellent movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly good movie, February 1, 2009

This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
I found this movie in the cut-out bin at the local video store. When I asked the clerk about it, he didn't know anything about it or anyone who had ever watched it. I've semi-followed Christopher Lambert over the years, from "Greystoke...Tarzan" to "Highlander" to now. I especially enjoy that "Highlander" still holds up pretty well over the years.

"Day of Wrath" is a very nice little detective-costume drama-action movie. Lambert is the sheriff of a Spanish village who investigate the murders of local nobles/aristocrats. Why are they being murdered and why does no one seem to care? Set in Spain during the Inquisition, the movie explores power, intimidation, apathy, loyalty, and acquiescence to corruption. What is the greater good? To whom do we owe our loyalty and duty? "Day of Wrath" examines how we choose to live our lives and what choices we make when faced with these situations, and what are the consequences of our decisions.

This is an enjoyable and satisfying movie if you pay attention and follow the plot. If you have a short attention span, or if you want the plot spoon-fed to you, or if you want non-stop action without a plot, then I would suggest you pass this by. Continue to enjoy your movies written by screenwriters who do not understand pacing and timing, and who were schooled in the "throw-everything-out-there-at-once, some-of-it-should-stick-to-the-wall technique.

I'm a sucker for movies such as, L.A. Confidential, The Usual Suspects, The Name of the Rose, Memento, and Enigma - movies that take their time and make you think. But, I also enjoy little known movies such as Mumford, Ginger Snaps, The Yakuza (w/ Mitchum), Wanda Nevada, Irma Vep - movies that are gems with interesting plots, paced story lines and good actors.

And...oh yeah, I loved all those Sherlock Holmes stories I read as a kid.

Take a chance on this movie. Don't expect it to knock your socks off, but you may find you enjoy it more than you expected.
