"One Nation, One Faith",
By
This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
A very pleasant surprise, Day of Wrath brings to the screen the story of a sheriff in a small Spanish town as he tries to get to the bottom of an ongoing series of brutal and highly mysterious murders.
The setting is Spain in 1542 and a small town sheriff, recently back from Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands, finds himself at a loss when confronted with several murders that no one seems to acknowledge, not even the victims' spouses! Little does he know that he is in the middle of an intriguing civil war... Christopher Lambert, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well. Blanca Marsillach was delightful as Carmen de Jaramillo; let's see more of her... Very well written and very well presented, the movie is one that can be watched over and over again. The setting, the plot, the costumes, and the music are all wonderful, though the battle sequences could have been better. In short, Day of Wrath is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment!

Medieval Mystery,

This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
This medieval mystery has many twists, so pay close attention to the details. It's an excellent spell-binder that trots along at a fast pace with plenty of suspense. 'Who done it and why' is the big question when royals suddenly drop dead during the night due to some nasty wounds and various letters of the alphabet carved into their flesh. Before the befuddled sheriff can get a witness, the bodies disappear! Is the sheriff drinking too much and imagining all the blood and guts, or is there a conspiracy involving a secret list of names? Excellent movie!

This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
I found this movie in the cut-out bin at the local video store. When I asked the clerk about it, he didn't know anything about it or anyone who had ever watched it. I've semi-followed Christopher Lambert over the years, from "Greystoke...Tarzan" to "Highlander" to now. I especially enjoy that "Highlander" still holds up pretty well over the years.
"Day of Wrath" is a very nice little detective-costume drama-action movie. Lambert is the sheriff of a Spanish village who investigate the murders of local nobles/aristocrats. Why are they being murdered and why does no one seem to care? Set in Spain during the Inquisition, the movie explores power, intimidation, apathy, loyalty, and acquiescence to corruption. What is the greater good? To whom do we owe our loyalty and duty? "Day of Wrath" examines how we choose to live our lives and what choices we make when faced with these situations, and what are the consequences of our decisions. This is an enjoyable and satisfying movie if you pay attention and follow the plot. If you have a short attention span, or if you want the plot spoon-fed to you, or if you want non-stop action without a plot, then I would suggest you pass this by. Continue to enjoy your movies written by screenwriters who do not understand pacing and timing, and who were schooled in the "throw-everything-out-there-at-once, some-of-it-should-stick-to-the-wall technique. I'm a sucker for movies such as, L.A. Confidential, The Usual Suspects, The Name of the Rose, Memento, and Enigma - movies that take their time and make you think. But, I also enjoy little known movies such as Mumford, Ginger Snaps, The Yakuza (w/ Mitchum), Wanda Nevada, Irma Vep - movies that are gems with interesting plots, paced story lines and good actors. And...oh yeah, I loved all those Sherlock Holmes stories I read as a kid. Take a chance on this movie. Don't expect it to knock your socks off, but you may find you enjoy it more than you expected.

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Good acting, fairly good plot. I reminded me of an extended flashback as seen in the Highlander TV series.

horrible, please see the well worded review by Marty A. Silvert "pogodog." the plot is awful, the acting should not have been paid for, and the fights were the same - bad.

Really bad movie,

This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
This was a really bad movie. I only watched this (thank you DVR) because it had Christopher Lambert and Brian Blessed (father of the first Black Adder) in it. Unfortunately, everyone in this movie was terrible. I think they just took the money (and embarrassment) and left their acting chops home. Blanca Marsillach was well represented by a body double in the nude scenes and Szonja Oroszlán was very cute in a long red wig and her crossed eyes. Unfortunately, neither of these ladies can act their way out of a paper bag. The only decent performance (and interesting character) was Lukács Bicskey as the mercenary. They should have made the movie about him. The fights were horribly choreographed and Lambert curiously managed to lose every fight his was engaged. The script was ridiculous and not as believable as the Moon is made of green cheese.(SPOILER ALERT) I just wish that instead of murdering everyone on the list to eliminate an unidentified blackmailer, they would have just set a trap when delivering the blackmail payment, but this would make way too much sense. I would not waste any space in my collection for this piece of crap.

This review is for the Amazon VOD rental of this film. This is a fairly good
historical drama. It has been quite some time since I have seen a film starring Christopher Lambert and and he is very good in this one. Blanca Marsillach is a beautiful actress and does quite well playing a women trying to hide her past. I think this film is well worth the VOD rental price.

Nor Bad...,
This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
Gory suspense, with the plot hatched against the background of the Spanish Inquisition.
We have Brian Blessed in the role of the governor Lord Francisco de Ruiz. A superb actor! I remember him as Augustus Ceasar in the immortal BBC series "I, Claudius". James Faulkner is not less compelling in the role of friar Anselmo. What do both have in common? Well, they are both British dramatic actors, which explains their superb performance, something that is missing in our hero Ruy de Mendoza, portrayed by Christopher Lambert, who sounds superficial at times. All in all, a violent and compelling drama. Not bad at all.

Fine and satisfying Time piece,
This review is from: Day of Wrath (DVD)
Set in the 16th century in spain..It tells the tale of a sheriff Ruy de Mendoza- played quite well by Christopher Lambert...a man of noble origins who sets abbout to investigate the murders of the elite.
WIdows lose their husbands without uttering a word or shedding a tear and why this is so bothers Mendoza. Futher investigations bring to light a massive conspiracy by the clergy and members of the court who have a secret that is worth murder to keep hidden. At steak is their very existence in this world which they inhabit; a world where status and origin can mean life or death.

This film is amazing! To my knowledge, is the only one of it's kind addressing the conversion of Spanish Jews to Christianity during the 1400 and 1500's. History shows that some stayed in Spain and took on new identities as in this thriller of a film. Here in New Mexico, Arizona, and southern Colorado live thousands of descendants who were saved from the Inquision by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella because they loaned money to the Spanish crown for Columbus to come to the new world as well as for Spanish crusades. The Two largest land grants in the Southwestern United States were colonized by the Jews who left Spain and what an awesome script to show what happened with others who had secrets within secrets in order to continue to live in Spain over the next generations. I would seriously think about giving the Hungarian cast and crew five stars.
As for someone's comment about Christopher Lambert...You've got to be kidding!!! The man has reinvented himself from a songwriter in love with an older woman in LOVE SONG ( in his earlier career) to a Cajun Cop in Chicago who has turned away from his Catholic faith and yet uses the parts of the New Testament he knows to catch a really sick serial killer in RESURRECTION. He played an international master chess player forced to help the police and a psychologist track a killer in the thriller KNIGHT MOVES...it is kind of like saying that every actor who plays in theatre and film in period pieces is stuck...Don't miss this sleeper just because it didn't have big studio distribution...our past shows us so much about or present and how we can influence a better future...If you get the DVD, the extras are great. None of this film is dry, slow or boring. |
