4.0 out of 5 stars This is NOT your typical James Bond story
I almost gave this book 5 stars. The action is there, non stop. Peter Thorn really knows how to keep moving. Helen Gray was so manly that she might as well be just another guy helping Peter out. After all, it seems they don't know what to do with each other. Their "intimate" moments are the only awkward parts of this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
I looked forward to reading this book. Normally I can read Larry Bond's books in two or three days, they're so engrossing. This one took me almost a month. I had to force myself to continue reading most of it. Totally unbelieveable cardboard characters - and that's the two heroes. If Bond's next book has these two characters (Thorn and Gray) in it, I'm not going to...

An interesting part in this book is that an American undersecretary gets blown out to pieces at an Egyptian airport and there is hardly any comment about it. That part wasn't part of the main story I think. It was just there to make us dislike Prince Ibrahim.

I loved the language and the dialogues, especially when Gen. Farrell (ret.) enters the story. I never heard so many "Hells" and "Christs" and "Damns" and "God****" among military men. And I used to work with tough guys form SPAWAR and SPECWAR units. Well, I think they just talk that way out there in the field.*

The book is a good read, very entertaining, but it was written in a different world, so I don't know how many people would enjoy a story such as this today. Stasi mercenaries, incompetent Soviet military, fanatical Arabs, all ugly ghosts from the Reagan era are brought back to life. Loved the chases, the killings, the murders, the non stop action, and all the heroin wasted in this story.

But I agree with some of the other reviewers. It was a good read, but highly impossible

*(OK I admit it. I was just a PMT assigned to shore duty with a bunch of Navy corpsmen, bunch of yeomen and a whole lot Marine I&I's.)

Like I'm going to believe those two can off scores of highly trained killers with every time of gun and hand to hand combat on three continents and save the USA from nuclear annihilation. Not a single reason to like these two cartoon characters. C'mon Larry, I know you can do better because I read your other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining time-filler in a big way!, July 18, 1999
This review is from: Day of Wrath (Hardcover)
A well-paced actioner featuring the main characters from THE ENEMY WITHIN, Col Peter Thorn and the FBI's Helen Gray. This time a plane carrying UN weapons inspectors crashes in Russia, and investigations lead to the trail of blackmarket tactical nuclear warheads for sale . . . and what interest does a Saudi prince have in these weapons? The outcome may be predictable and the characters may seem like they have leapt out from a LETHAL WEAPON movie, but the strengths of this book are the story, the research behind the weapons themselves and how they could be transported into the US and a good, fast-pacing and simple prose. The action scenes are undeniably entertaining, and the bit that made me laugh was the bad guy's last word before being shot . . . Noooooooo! That is sooo Hollywood! In fact, why hasn't this(or any other of Larry Bond's novels, for that matter) been made into a movie yet?

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible kindle transcription, December 29, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Probably would have been a decent read if it weren't for the atrocious and repeated errors in transcription to kindle format. It was obviously not proof-read the entire way through, as towards the second half of the book errors become more and more common until there are multiple errors in the same sentence. "in" become "hi", "the" becomes "die", etc., etc.

To get a sense of how frustrating this is, re-read the above with the same transcription errors:

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book in the Bond tradition..., June 19, 1998

This review is from: Day of Wrath (Hardcover)
This book features the same main characters who were introduced in The Enemy Within, and it follows a similar story line. Bond's technical knowledge makes his writing more realistic. Although his plots seem a bit unlikely in places, they do entertain. If you're a Larry Bond fan, or perhaps a Tom Clancy fan, you'll enjoy this new techno-thriller.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Kindle Transcription, December 25, 2009

I bought this book for my Kindle, having read the author before and enjoying his work. Much to my dismay, the Kindle version is riddled with typographical and transcription errors. There is probably at least one error per page, which is more than enough to distract while I am trying to read.

The book seems OK, but I can't really tell because I can't read three sentences without having to change 'die' the 'the' in my head, or 'mat' into 'that' and on and on.

Just don't buy the Kindle version.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting book, May 18, 2000
By A Customer
After reading bad reviews I was at first sceptical I was greatly mistaken. This was an action packed book. The troubles that our heros have from the start after the plane crash until the end of the book sets the tone. The billionaire Saudi prince that plays the villain conjurs up images of Osama Bin Laden. The acts of terrorism that the evel prince comes up with are very original. The evil forces attempt to nuke Washington D.C. will keep you on the edge of your seat. The ending is very

exciting as well with the prince recieving Saudi justice for his deeds. A very exciting book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hated the love story; liked the thriller story., November 25, 1999
By
I miss the old Larry Bond. Vortex, Cauldron and Red Phoenix were amazing and filled in the gap when Tom Clancy lost his way. And now it seems that with this title and The Enemy Within, Bond has also decided to pander to the mainstream. The romance angle was distracting and unconvincing and cut from the same cloth as Harlequin. Having said that, once I forced myself past the first 100 pages or so, I really began to enjoy the story. I had to prepare myself for those awkward moments when the two characters were left alone, but a quick scan of the mush allowed me to get back to the story.

I personelly thought this book was well written, and very exciting to read. Larry Bond has action from the first page to the very last page. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes military suspense.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great effort from Larry Bond, August 24, 1998
By
This review is from: Day of Wrath (Hardcover)
I'm a huge fan of Larry Bond -- Red Pheonix is one of the best war/techno-thriller books I've ever read, and I really enjoyed Vortex and Caldron, too. But Day of Wrath left me wanting more -- frankly, I find the main love interest a little trite in this story, and the main plot line is more derivative than I've come to expect from Larry Bond. Still, I found it an entertaining read, though compared to other recent works in this genre (Clancy's new Rainbow Six, for example), I'd have to give it a low passing grade. I will buy Bond's next book, though, and hope for a more original effort next time.
