Editorial Reviews

Deluxe two CD edition includes a bonus CD containing five additional tracks. Digitally remastered edition of the British Pomp Rock band's 1976 album. A Day At The Races, which was written and recorded by Queen at their happiest, riding on the crest of a wave and loving every second. The album is an infectiously jubilant piece of music full of love, optimism and good old fashioned Rock 'n' Roll. Like A Night At The Opera, it again borrowed the name of a Marx Bros movie, and its cover was similar to that of ..Night..., a variation on the same Queen Crest. It reached #1 on the British charts and features the classics 'Tie Your Mother Down', Freddie Mercury's personal favorite composition 'Somebody To Love' and 'Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy'

Queen is one of favorite bands so I've been enjoying this CD.
Linda Cooper-smith
It was once reported that the late, great Freddie Mercury wanted "A Day At The Races" and A Night at the Opera to have been a double album.
Tim Brough
This 2011 Universal Records reissue includes a remastered version of the original '76 album, which sounds great.

Please note this album review focuses on comparing the two CD editions and not reviewing the music.

This classic 5 star Queen album came after 'Night at the Opera' and is a musically complimentary follow-on from that album with impeccable musicianship, outstanding compositions that vary from the rocking,'Tie your Mother Down', heartfelt ballads like 'You take my breath away' to the anthem 'Teo Torriatte'.

'Somebody To Love' is arguably the standout here although 'The Millionaire Waltz' is a close second with all that typifies Queen with radical dynamics from whispered cabaret to rocking it down with over-dubbed guitar and vocal extravaganza to climactic pounding drums all in one composition. This album exemplifies what Queen could do in the studio and is easily as musically rich as 'Night at the Opera'.

I have bought the deluxe version which includes an extra EP with 5 additional tracks. I will refer to this later.

Like the Queen 2 remaster, I do like the whole new Day at the Races 2011 package, but I find the sound quality improvements perhaps not as noticeable as what I did with the Queen 2 2011 remaster. (See my review '2011 Remaster compared to 1991 Queen 2, April 1, 2011'). The changes are very subtle - with the silences marginally quieter, the bass possibly more pronounced and the backing vocals more defined.

What was noticeable is that when comparing the two versions, I had to turn down the 2011 remaster as the volume has been significantly lifted. Each time I thought how amazing a part of the track sounded on the 2011, I was surprised that when I raised the volume listening to 1993 remaster it sounded as good.

Queen rocked to stardom in the 1970s, with Freddie Mercury's (1946-91) silky voice leading. They produced many excellent songs, and were popular worldwide, right up until Freddie Mercury's death from AIDS in 1991. Throughout my youth, I loved Queen's sound, and their many wonderful songs - and now I have them again!

This album was Queen's fifth studio album, having been originally released in 1976. It's a fantastic album that went platinum in the UK and double-platinum in the US! Some consider it Queen's finest album. It includes such great songs as Somebody To Love, Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, Long Away, and Teo Torriatte.

This 2011 Universal Records reissue includes a remastered version of the original '76 album, which sounds great. As is often the case with bonus tracks, the ones on this album are different versions of songs already on the album. What's so nice about this two-CD set is that you can either listen to both CDs one after another, or only listen to the CD with the bonus tracks when you feel like it. It's a great idea, I love it!

Songs like the 'Millionaire Waltz ','Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy' , 'Tel Torriate' and 'Long Away' take take you right to the heart of classic rock opera at it's very best. While there are the exhilirating hard rock classics like 'Tie Your Mother Down'. For me listening to this album just like the previous 2 is like medidating....Wonderful

What can you say about one of the greatest bands that ever existed. Compeling songs that lead you to believe there wasn't enough time to showcase the real power of their musical talent. Too bad Freddie went so young.

This 2004 mini-LP replica of Queen's follow-up to "A Night At The Opera" contains a stellar remastering(by Peter Mew at Abbey Road) that buries both the 1991 Hollywood A Day At The Races and the 1998 The Crown Jewels ones."Tie Your Mother Down","Somebody To Love","You Take My Breath Away" and "Long Away" have never sounded better,to say the least! Also the mini-LP replica itself is authentic, detailed and very cool.Come and get it indeed.

A good record that has a mix of classical, hard rock and opera. Of course, this is Queen - that's just what they did. And for them, it works. I don't know if this would have worked for just anyone. Not a great record, but a good one.
It starts off with Let us cling together that is a cross between their own sound and a Beatles sound that works really well. Tie your mother down just plain rocks. Millionaire Waltz is one of those cool songs that they do that is part rock, part opera. Somebody to Love is one of the best on here.

Get this record. Get it now.

This album simply defines what queen's music is all about. After A Night At The Opera, this album made sure Queen was real and would stay for a long time.
