I saw this movie late at night when I was unable to sleep. Cuba Gooding Jr.and Moira Kelly were selected beautifully in the roles of the starcrossed lovers. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As I Thought
As always Cuba Gooding is excellent in his performance in this movie. However, the content of the movie is not what I expected. I know this movie has been around for a while but this is my first time seeing it. I would not suggest that this is one of Goodings best performances. I did not like the ending at all.

I saw this movie late at night when I was unable to sleep. Cuba Gooding Jr.and Moira Kelly were selected beautifully in the roles of the starcrossed lovers. As for the comment above, referring to the situation having not come to pass and that there are treatments, this is true. However, This is about AIDS despite the fact the word was never uttered but expressed in many other ways. The movie is set in the future, and let us keep in mind the AIDS virus continues to mutate. Can we say that in the future this may NOT come to pass? Despite the bleak way of life and the "Big Brother environment",I cannot help but feel that this movie comes across as hopeful, to the extent, that at the conclusion the girl(Blue) quite literally takes on the job of her lover, thereby, ( not lost on me) picking up the "Torch" both literally and figuratively. He (her lover's name was Torch)could handle living his life to its horrible conclusion, alone and sick with the illness that plagued him, if he knew she was out there living and continuing to keep the cause alive. Compassion and caring would not die with him as he made the sacrifice for the two of them by sending her away instead of keeping her to himself. She, instead, would serve the greater good and take care of others being able to help more than just himself. He could take heart in knowing he did not die in vain, as he had groomed her into the job himself. What was the cause you might ask? Setting up ambushes of shipments of the sick being transferred to quarantined areas so that it was possible to offer comfort to the sick and dying. Cures were not being researched. It was easier to send away the sick and tattoo them with a "P"for postive, that cannot be removed, than to research treatments and cures, supply funding, and educate the masses on the disease. The greatest hurt was in knowing that Blue herself had, unwittingly, betrayed Torch and killed his "son" Willie. Blue was naive and thought her friend~who had felt snubbed since Torch came along~would not betray her. The friend had disclosed the information Blue gave her in trust, to the authorities. Now Clue has to pay the price in the loss of her love(Torch), Willie(The boy she was treating as her own son) and her former existence. No longer was she oblivious to the true cruelty to those sick and needing compassion and respect instead of warehousing and degradation until they died. By the way any of you who think "They" are really working on a cure for AIDS and HIV are living in the same state of mind as our heroine of the movie. They are looking for ways to manage the disease. Not cures. There is no money in curing diseases. pharmaceutical companies are making a killing off of this and other diseases, literally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moira Kelly at one of her best, March 19, 2001

The movie itself is a kind of the early nineties' AIDS pandemonium projected onto the Orwell's visions of 1984. Mentally nothing really challenging although romantic (as 1984 book for a big part of it) and somewhat inspiring. But... if you like Moira Kelly (as I do) - this is the one you shouldn't miss (beside "The Cutting Edge" of course)! Three stars for the movie, five stars for Moira and four for the others - averages to four at my scale. This means: go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome movie... Now where's the book?, May 18, 2011

This is one of my all time favorite movies. It is hard to believe in a movie romance because visual chemistry is very difficult to portray. In Titantic you actually beleived the romance occured in four days because the chemistry was so strong. Serendipidy is another movie where the romance gets you swept in. This is one of those movies. You really get a sense of the attraction and eventual love of this couple. Cuba is so intense in this movie. He draws you in so you care about his character and you can imagine yourself as Blue, falling for this very intense man. You kind of understand why she defies her brother and his thug cop friends to be with her man. This is a great love story as well a great story in general. I only wish there was a book.

One of Cuba Gooding Jr.'s most memorable performances to the few of us who've had the luck to see this movie. I was just a kid when it first aired, but I never forgot about the girl named Blue who loved a man enough to want to die for him... a man who was trying to open the eyes of the world, even though he himself was doomed and knew it.

This movie is so very underrated that I had to run a search for female characters named Blue to find it. I am extremely glad to have been able to track it down and purchase it, as viewing it as an adult has been an entirely different experience. I had very strange parents that let me watch R rated films from a very young age, so there were many things lost on me that first time, but I understood the plight, the fear, and the love... and what kept it alive in my mind for over a decade was the love.

Yes, it's an apocalyptic storyline, but that undercurrent of hope is what binds you to it and carries you through even the most heart-wrenching moments. This movie changed my life. Twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great HBO flick, October 19, 2006

I seen it a few months back then, to my dismay it was on again the same time as RAW, but instead I recorded it anyways. It does a very good job of creating a nightmare Orwellian future, without making the people seem too paranoid for the most part. The scenes of the President talking on TV were very powerful. It strongly reminded one of a "Big Brother lite." Yes there is violence and a love story and rebels risking their lives for a better future.

Some favorite moments: 1. The girls running out of the clinic 2. The guard and dog patrolling the quarantine 3. The rebel leader screaming for guards there was a negative present(which is punishable by getting shot on the premises) 4. The extremely moving ending and the new rebel leader Awesome flick you don't wanna miss, trust me.

This movie is everything it was when I first saw it. I loved it then. It was so ahead of it's self. It reminded me alot of how AD|IDS was treated at first and what I could imagine the government could do if it wanted. Who knows. It could happen in the future. Cuba and Mora are excellent with each other.

4.0 out of 5 stars cuba is the best, February 17, 2006
This review is from: Daybreak (DVD)
just as good as i remembered! I have spent 10yrs trying to find this film as i first saw it on sky tv. Everytime i described it to someone they tried to point me to Outbreak! Anyway basic plot outline is a good old goverment conspiracy and the good guys (cuba gooding jr and co) trying to outwit the bad guys (omar epps and cronies). The only problem that some might find with this film is the fact that its not as polished as the hollywood blockbusters but it is a made for tv movie. Overall i'm glad i managed to find this film as i really enjoyed watching it again.
