This review is from: The Daydream Workbook (Paperback)
So, I've had the book for awhile. I have also read Langs' Decoding Your Dreams, Dreams and Emotional Adaptation, and Dream Workbook. The quality of thought and novelty of application behind Langs' writing concerning his Theory of Communicative-Adaptation is very impressive. The feeling of 'something new and profound' being at the root of his ideas definitely acts as fuel for further investigation.
With his work on decoding dreams, I was first introduced to his particular theory of the unconscious, and the methods whereby he seeks to decode and process the information there-in. The unconscious encodes meaning as a result of trauma in order to protect us when we are vulnerable to further damage. It's this particular little gem, though, that has openned my eyes to the power of the Commicative-Adaptation method of self-analysis.
I can't help but wonder how this system has remained so obscure. It addresses such a wide variety of topics, most novel of which is how it makes use of semiotics in a novel way which addresses existential dilemmas millions of people are faced with every day of their lives. Though the ontological assumptions he implies do not match up with mine, there is no denying the pragmatic utlity of using the system to achieve greater fulfillment of personal values.
I recommend this book to anyone who would like to put themselves to the task of unraveling themselves and gaining a greater amount of insight into the influences of our habits of thinking and coping. I've only just begun to apply these ideas to my own daydreams, and already there have been a few moments of dramatic insight into myself that are infinitely more valuable than the price I paid for the book.
