Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Historic references to daylilies go back more than 2,000 years, and they were introduced into the U.S. in the late nineteenth century. Grosvenor's comprehensive guide to this easy-to-grow perennial gives information on the various species: cultivation (soil preparation, planting, watering, mulching, weed control, fertilizing, and dividing); propagation; and classification. There's a 95-page list of recommended varieties divided into large-flowered daylilies and small-flowered and miniature plants; a chapter on gardening and landscaping that focuses on mass plantings, color, and companion plants; and a chapter on pest and disease control. Also included are tips on photographing daylilies and on hybridizing. There even are recipes--fried and sauteed daylilies, a daylily casserole, a soup, and chicken. The book contains 300 color photographs and 33 diagrams and tables. George Cohen

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures......but, July 20, 2000
This review is from: Daylilies for the Garden (Hardcover)
The pictures alone in this book make it an essential purchase for the daylily fancier. I would have given it five stars except there was no mention of Stamile's Candies, which have won the last two Stout Silver Medals. Also, I found the author tended to mention only good points of a plant and not bad ones such as poor bud counts. People buying this book want to know all about a plant so that they can make an informed judgement if they are considering buying the plant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs, comprehensive discussion, November 5, 1999

This review is from: Daylilies for the Garden (Hardcover)
This text was both an easy read and comprehensive coverage of daylily culture and care, with an extensive collection of recommended cultivars. The author's coverage is from an Australian gardener's perspective, but he also comments on suitability for colder climates like American zone 4 and 5. After reading it I keep it handy just to review the photos and get me through the winter months.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent miniatures, December 29, 1999
This review is from: Daylilies for the Garden (Hardcover)
The second book from Graeme Grosvenor on daylilies. A very good book on daylilies; what makes this one is the photography. I think I have read all the books ever written on the daylily, but I have never come across such beautiful photographs, especially of the miniature cultivars which are usually somewhat neglected. What is more the daylilies depicted are instantly recognisable as the flowers that grow in my garden. This book is thorough in content and will do much to get more people hooked on this beautiful and utterly enchanting perennial.
