5.0 out of 5 stars A Wedding in Covington
I loved my latest visit to Covington. Life there is so peaceful and tranquil.

Hannah and Max tie the knot. An unexpected May snowstorm causes Lurina to be trapped out in the snow. She decides the time has come to move to a retirement home.

Many other adventures happen to this group of friends and family. If you have read the others in this series,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Most excellent!, August 15, 2006
By
This newest book in the Covington series is not only about Hannah Parrish, who, at the age of 75, is going forward with her wedding to George Maxwell (better known as Max), but also about the friendship between three exceptional women who share each other's lives. Although Amelia, Grace, and Hannah have lived quietly together in their farmhouse in Covington for several years, they are about to experience life changes that will be vastly different from any they could have expected. We struggle with Grace as she seeks answers on how to control her diabetes, and we take great pleasure in her relationship with her special friend, Bob, as it continues to grow. Then there is Amelia, whom many consider the most fragile member of this trio. After moving to Covington, Amelia discovered an amazing aptitude for photography, but now she seems to be growing weary of several things that are involved in her newfound career.

Within the pages of this book, through the relationship between Hannah and Max, we are allowed a rare glimpse into the deep-seated fears of intimacy held by many older people. Although Hannah and Max are getting married, both have neglected to tell the other that what began as friendship and a marriage of convenience, has grown into much more. In fact, to her own surprise, Hannah has come to realize that she has developed a deep love for Max and a surprising desire for passion which she cannot bring herself to discuss with him. Because of this, she is left to agonize over his feelings for her. Has he grown to love her as she loves him? Without the ability to communicate on an intimate level, she might never be sure.

Joan Medlicott has my deepest respect. I have found that her perceptiveness and depth of understanding of the emotions of women, at any age, is exceptional, as is her talent for writing. She puts down on paper the feelings and emotions that many feel but are too embarrassed to mention.

***** This is a story about love and friendship at any age and the many ways it can be expressed. If you have been following this series, you will immediately step right back into the lives of Amelia, Grace, and Hannah. However, make no mistake about it, if you have NOT been keeping up with these ladies, you will soon be under their spell and intertwined in their lives. Bravo, Joan! You've done it again! *****

3.0 out of 5 stars for fans of the series only, May 25, 2006
In quiet Covington, North Carolina Grace Singleton, Hannah Parrish and Amelia DeClose share a farmhouse. However, change is everywhere, but especially to the three best friends.

Hannah and Max agree that they will marry soon, but not live together as they will continue to maintain separate homes. Grace worries that her friend Bob, who has moved next door, is too harsh a disciplinarian on her two grandchildren living with her since their mom left for Florida to practice law; he thinks Grace lets the infant tyrant two year old Melissa get away with anything including destroying her brother Tyler's history report. Amelia's photographs have become very popular and people from as far away as New York buy them. In fact, she is going to attend a showing of her work in the big Apple of an impoverished mountain family that lays bare their fall into the ooze below the food chain.

Clearly for fans of the series only, life moves on filled with relationship troubles that lead to changes for the three Tarheel ladies. The story line is obviously character driven by the trio as each has problems to cope with while dealing with other people. However, one must wonder how you're going to keep Amelia down on the farm after she seen New York City.

I love every book Joan Medlicott writes about the Ladies of Covington because I'm close in age to the ladies, I grew up near the setting in the NC mountains, so I can relate to them and the area. I was glad to finally read about the wedding and what transpired afterwards. As always, I couldn't put the book down, and was sad to reach the end, knowing another book about the ladies wouldn't be out for another year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book - weird cover!, August 26, 2006
By
Love Joan Medlicott, love the ladies, but who decided the cover would show 3 women in their 30s? I thought I had ordered the wrong book!!! Surely someone should notice these books are selling like hotcakes - perhaps because the ladies are not even close to being in their thirties!!!

Except for the cover, the book lived up to all my expectations, which is to say it took me right into the lives of Hannah, Grace, and Amelia - unquestionably one of my favorite places to be.

I love this series. The ladies are very real; have real problems and real issues that we all deal with in life. And not everything comes out smelling like roses, but the ladies cope, realign their lives and go on. They are an inspiration.

3.0 out of 5 stars Days After the Wedding, October 30, 2006
I think JM should have left off the TWO and the title would have worked better. The story was more about others afterwards than Max and Hannah. I also agree with the reviewer who thought the women on the cover were not a fair representation of Amelia, Hannah and Grace.

I did enjoy the story but only mildly. The story was not as well put together as the others in the series and it seemed to develop a situation or particular character and then would just drop the thought. I also found a few mistakes. Almost as if she forgot what she wrote in the previous paragraph.

Maybe Ms Medlicott was trying to shape things up for a more interesting and meaty subsequent novel. I hope so. I like these people and want to know them more deeply. I think she needs a sharper editor. Authors of stories for the older set deserve as good a quality as the rest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures the complexity of women, June 26, 2006

Another heartwarming, lifegiving novel in the Covington series. Once again, Joan Medlicott captures the essence of these three women committed to not only each other but to the "extended" family members who have gained access to their hearts...from the

much awaited date of Hannah's wedding, Amelia's maturing in matters of love and self-worth, Grace's loving connection with Lucy, to Russell and Emily's marriage problems is intelligently done.

Thank you, Joan...can't wait for your next book.

I have all the other Covington books, so when I realized this one was available I had to have it. I think the story is very much on par with all the other books in this series. Readers will not be disappointed.
