Editorial Reviews

Days Are Gone is the highly anticipated debut album from breakout band HAIM. Recorded mostly in HAIM's native Los Angeles, the album sees sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim working alongside acclaimed producers Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Vampire Weekend) and James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys). Days Are Gone features crowd favorites "Falling," "Forever," and "Don't Save Me" as well as title track "Days Are Gone," which was co-written with Kid Harpoon and Jessie Ware.
The Southern California trio has attracted a surge of industry attention since releasing their EPs Forever, Don t Save Me and Falling. The band has also been prominently featured in Rolling Stone's esteemed Best of Rock issue and Elle's Women In Music issue, as well as recognized as "Faces to Watch 2013" by The Los Angeles Times, "20 Bands To Watch Out For" by Complex and "15 New Stars We Love" by Entertainment Weekly. In the UK, HAIM have impressively become the first female American act to ever win the BBC's Sound of 2013, an annual poll of industry leaders to identify the most promising new music talent. This award has been a reliable indicator of success in recent years, with Ellie Goulding and Jessie J being named the winners in the past.

HAIM's electrifying live performances, including sold-out headlining shows at Los Angeles 'Troubadour and New York's Music Hall of Williamsburg in addition to festival appearances at SXSW, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Firefly and Governor s Ball, have made waves on both sides of the Atlantic. Fader has declared that HAIM s practiced live show easily rivals any of their peers, and it is no wonder that HAIM have been asked to support the likes of Phoenix, Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons and Vampire Weekend on tour.

2013 has been the year of Haim. From dominating the summer festival circuit to performing for prime ministers and gaining rabid fans the world over--these three sisters from California have done all of this without an official LP to their name. Now that it's finally here, it's both what I had hoped for as well as refreshingly surprising. To say that their music contains a whole host of influences is an understatement, yet the sisters ground their many influences in their sweet perfect harmonies and bouncy feel good attitude floating throughout the entire album.

The Haim sisters come from a family of accomplished musicians which makes sense as their technical skill and ability to craft songs is borderline genius. The flitting nuances and subtleties come not just from musicians who love music and can sing and play, but those who have deeply lived and breathed music their entire lives as well as exposed to an incredible range of music from birth. Thus the music has an organic and effortless appeal despite the many disparate tones which belies the tremendous talent it takes to create an album like this. Musically, this album really surprised me as it manages to both be almost immediately accessible as well as satisfying with real weight.

The first three tracks off the album make for a 1-2-3 punch of frankly some of the best pop music of 2013. "Forever" is my favorite out of the three currently, but ask me in another month or two and it might well be "The Wire" or "Falling." "If I Could Change Your Mind" has a nice r&b influence, and while upbeat is one of the more serious and emotional tracks on the album.

I kept hearing about this band vaguely. At first I didn't really pay attention to them. All I heard was that they were a band of sisters who decided to start a band with the influence of their parents who enjoyed good rock music! I didn't go crazy to look into the band though. Then I heard that the sisters debut album kept Justin Timberlakes second "20/20" album from the top spot in the UK charts. That is impressive. If there's one thing I know, its that the UK usually foreshadow a groups success in the US. So I read more into the bands impressive upbringing and I heard the song "The Wire" on the radio and liked it a lot. I previewed other songs from the album on YouTube and I could not help myself, I had to get the CD. Their sound is so 80s, yet futuristic at the same time. There is even some R&B influence in there. I also agree with many people who compare them to a more modern Fleetwood Mac, the music my parents liked! So after a few good listens of this great debut album from 3 sexy, yet talented sisters, here is a track by track review.

1. Falling: The pulsing beat and guitars in this song are so relaxing yet danceable! The singing is swift and heavenly. Very sexy! Some have even compared the vocals to Michael Jackson and I can't disagree. There is something just majestic about this song. The music video really suits the feel of the song. Great song to start off this classic album! 10/10
2. Forever: The transition into this song is just clever! This really sounds like a lost 80s hit pop song! Her vocals make me melt! There is a nice guitar section in the a little over halfway that leads into one of the most infectious bridges I've ever heard in any song in recent memory.

These three sisters from Southern Califonia are straight up musicians! They write and play everything themselves, and it is crazy how talented they are. Expect percussion-driven pop rock, a lot of which sounds like it could be from the 80s thanks to the use of the synth. I find myself choosing a new favorite song every time I listen to Days Are Gone, but some of the definite stand out tracks are "Forever," "If I Could Change Your Mind," "Don't Save Me," "Falling," "The Wire," "Go Slow".. okay I'm just naming every track. The point is, do yourself a favor and buy this album. TODAY!!

It takes a certain kind of person to enjoy Haim, but the ones who do should absolutely love them! Their talent and energy levels are through the roof, and together they make intense, unique music. Please see them live if you have a chance! They are one of the best bands I've ever seen live.

At first I wasn't sure I would really get into this CD, but after giving it a try and letting it sink in for a week or so, I started listening to it on repeat. I still can't understand what the girls are saying all the time, but the sound is addicting. I would describe the sound as indie pop with an 80's vibe. Not party music, but you might dance in your car a little while listening. Love it!

This is a decent LP.
I gave this a try after listening to Haim on and off for a few months. Late night purchase. Thought I might have some remorse in spending extra on the vinyl - but mostly just the opposite - the digital streams can be somewhat harsh - the vinyl does prove to be warmer. Hoped for one or 2 gems in addition to the better known tunes and was not disappointed.
It should be noted in a recent review that this is a 45RPM recording!! I get it - too long for a single LP - too short for a dual ... speed it up and it covers a double LP - but at 45 speed. Surprised me when I first put it on. Changing speeds is a belt adjustment on my turntable. This made me finally spend the coin on an outboard speed adjust.
