4.0 out of 5 stars 40 days for better living, October 31, 2011
This review is from: 40 Days to Better Living--Hypertension (Paperback)
Most of us would like to have optimal health, right? Maybe lose weight, manage diabetes, have more energy? The biggest hurdle to changing your lifestyle is not just having the willpower to do it, it's HOW. And Dr. Scott Morris has a plan. In his book, 40 Days to Better Living, Hypertension each day has Morning Reflections to help you start your day out right, Prayers to get you going Spiritually, a place to track medical needs, as well as movement so you can stay motivated to exercise. But, unlike other diet trackers that have this, Dr. Morris included an Evening Wrap-Up so that you can go over your day, celebrate sucesses, and learn to forgive yourself for mess ups.

There are lots of inspiring stories to help you get motivated, stay motivated and encourage you on this health journey. The best part of this book is that there is no specific diet to follow, no points to track, no fat grams or calories to count. You can use this with any plan you have in place already to achieve your goals!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lowering Your Blood Pressure, October 4, 2011
This review is from: 40 Days to Better Living--Hypertension (Paperback)
Having learned that I now have hypertension, I wanted to find a way to work on it in a sensible way. Now, I'm a `type A' personality that wants to get it done yesterday! This book, however, does not get you there yesterday!

40 Days to Better Living: Hypertension is a book that requires a balance between medications, lifestyle, emotions, family and friends, diet , exercise, stress, nutrition, and most importantly, prayer and meditation on God's goals for healthy living.

The book holds you accountable, yet doesn't condemn if you fail. In fact, it encourages you from the morning reflection to the evening wrap-up. It sets the tone by taking time to pray and/or meditate and plan some goals for your day. It's divided into six individual weeks, based on six different individuals, in a 40-day journey. Two days are left for reviewing what you did or didn't accomplish, rejoicing in the good changes, and reflecting on your continuing future goals.

Now you are ready to begin working on a lifestyle of wellness, changing and adding exercises, foods, and eating habits for the better. As we are admonished, "Remember to take time to pray or meditate each day."

A quick reminder: these six different people came to the Church Health Center for assistance. I don't think this book was necessarily meant to be used without medical supervision. I would look at this book as a work-along with your physician's advice, as each person's health is different. I know my health is way different from the six patients described here in the book, so I would need some guidance and direction.

This book is not the `let's get this done yesterday' book, but it is sensible and useful. As an aside, the photos themselves are stimulating and encouraging as you go through the book, uplifting and edifying you throughout!

This book was provided by Audra Jennings of The B&B Media Group, Inc., in exchange for my honest review. No monetary compensation was received.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Seven Step Program for Healthier Living, October 4, 2011
This review is from: 40 Days to Better Living--Hypertension (Paperback)
A Seven Step Program for Healthier Living

Dr. Scott Morris helps the reader with practical pointers and Biblical guidelines in a step by step plan for healthier living in the series "40 Days to Better Living." This book subtitled "Hypertension" is especially important in a day when so many are victims of high blood pressure.

Each day in this 40 day plan includes suggestions in areas of using faith, medical, movement, work, emotional health, nutrition and the importance of family and friends. Each week of the plan introduces a real life person with the story of how their lives have been changed as they applied these principles. I identified with Marcus as I tackled cleaning out the clutter in my life and with Arthur as I reexamined the importance of nutrition in relation to my hypertension.

I especially enjoyed the inspirational nature of the "Morning Reflection" and the "Evening Wrap Up." The carefully chosen scripture the guided thought for prayer add to the uplifting sense of satisfaction I experienced at the end of another fulfilling and meaningful day.

"40 Days to Better Living: Hypertension" is an important
seven step model toward experiencing a healthier lifestyle.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid ideas on living a healthy life with high blood pressure, October 1, 2011
This review is from: 40 Days to Better Living--Hypertension (Paperback)
High blood pressure is something that has plagued my family for years. My husband was diagnosed at a young age, and my son has been on medication since he was sixteen so as a mother and wife I was interested in learning new ways to help my family manage their blood pressure.
I loved the way this book was set up with each day beginning with a morning reflection, with a lot of the days focusing on individual stories of people who have come thru the Church Health Center. Each day also includes faith life, medical, movement, work, family &friends, emotional and then an evening wrap up. I found it encouraging that the evening wrap up includes a scripture verse as well as a prayer.
Overall for me I looked at this book not only as a guide but also a challenge in how we can take small steps over forty days to improve not only our overall health but our spiritual health as well. While some of the ideas presented is things that my family already do there were several ideas presented that we are all slowly incorporating into our lives, such as drinking more water, and moving more. Whether you or someone you know has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure or have been dealing with it for years this book is certainly for you, filled with information and personal stories that will motivate and inspire you to perhaps challenge yourself to embark on the journey of 40 Days To Better Living.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review.

4.0 out of 5 stars encouragement for daily progress, September 16, 2011

Joan N. "bookwomanJoan" (Whidbey Island, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 40 Days to Better Living--Hypertension (Paperback)
Dr. Morris, founder of the Church Health Center, wants you to be healthier. He has created several booklets to help you do so, to improve your life, just a bit, day by day.
Each of the 40 days of readings begins with a morning reflection. He frequently relates the stories of people who have gone to his Church Health Center and have had positive results.
Each day also has short readings and practices on faith, medical, movement, work, emotion, family and friends, and nutrition. The daily reading ends with an evening wrap-up including Scripture, encouragement, and a prayer.
In the faith section, we are encouraged to get a journal and record our faith progress. We are helped to discover our habits, to be joyful, be thankful...
In the medical area we jot down all our medical concerns, learn to take our pulse, list the medications we take, record our family medical history, recognize the symptoms of stroke and heart attack, quit smoking, drink enough water, determine your BMI, and many more.
For movement, we are encouraged to get moving, go for a walk, stretch, get more vigorous in our activity, do jumping jacks, dance, exercise while waiting in line, use weights, and more.
Considering work, we are to journal what we like and dislike about it, use a stress ball, listen to music, prepare healthy lunches, walk during lunch, and more.
The emotional area is an important aspect of overall wellness. We are encouraged to journal our feelings, practice deep breathing, relax, and sit in the sun are a few of the suggestions.
We need family and friends and are encouraged to ask for their support, ask one to go along on the journey, journal how they have helped, and more.
Under nutrition, we are to keep a food journal, develop a healthy shopping list, learn to read food labels, regulate our salt intake, eat some raw vegetables and whole grains, reduce our meet consumption, among others.
Most of the days center on a specific theme, carried through the seven areas. Topics include motivation, goal setting, first steps, setbacks, habits, triggers, seasons, sound, balance, and endurance are some of them.
I received an egalley of the book for the purpose of this review.
