11 Days at the Edge is an historical document that records the relationship between seeker and finder, student and teacher; it's an in-depth record of that most extraordinary event in the material world--the direct transmission of enlightenment, the experience of Self beyond ego. Or what Eckhart Tolle has termed "The Power of NOW." For anyone who wants to experience depth of consciousness, who wants the instantaneous experience of consciousness that is always here NOW, pp.47-57 reveal all.

I was at this retreat. I witnessed the experiences of depth and enlightened understanding that Michael Wombacher records. I've known Andrew Cohen for 14 years. I have had many dramatic, subtle and profound realizations of enlightened understanding in his presence, particularly on retreat. But reading the experience of Andrew's teaching in retreat from another's perspective is shifting something in my own consciousness in a way that feels permanent. Why? Because Mike Wombacher has had the courage to declare his allegiance publicly to certain spiritual laws that are unpopular in our current culture--cosmic principles inherent within the realm of Being that challenge much of the New Age materialism and self-gratification that so much of our culture is lost in and hungry for.

Many of us recognize these principles when we experience enlightened understanding, yet we are often afraid to admit they exist because of the cultural materialism inside ourselves and within our relationships at large.

This is a very personal and fascinating story, worth reading if only for the author's own journey to enlightenment that includes his falling out with his previous guru, who was himself a disciple of "Rudi" / Swami Rudrananda. In addition the first two chapters present a very clear and compelling summary of Cohen's ideas, and what makes them so exciting and applicable to the condition of Western spiritual seekers - a condition that Ken Wilber refers to as "terminal narcissism".

The reason I can only give the book four stars is that the author does not adequately address some of the serious ethical and personality issues surrounding Cohen's leadership (although he mentions it in an Appendix - sorry Michael, my error - this is an updated review). There are two full-length books about this (see Luna Tarlo "Mother of God" and Andre Van der Brack "Enlightenment Blues") and hundreds of posts by Cohen's ex-students (see "What Enlightenment" blog and the Wikipedia article on Cohen). The allegations range from abuse of power to downright cruelty and extortion of money - not to mention some anger management issues that seem unbefitting to an individual who professes to be a permanently enlightened master. Without going into the details, one would think that any serious student of Cohen's would be concerned about this, and failure to address this issue objectively represents to some extent a failure of the kind of integrity that is so much a part of the teaching. Since Cohen himself appears to be unable to acknowledge or confront these issues in a credible fashion, the burden of responsibility for doing this falls on his students, and particularly his active and committed ones. I can understand the difficulties of doing this, however, it needs to be done. If the Evolutionary Enlightenment movement is indeed to progress and to start another "revolution" (a word used frequently in books by or about Cohen), these concerns will need to be adressed.

I've read many books about the spiritual journey. Most are always very engaging and very interesting but few are page turners. In this book Michael takes you through his own experience and responses to Andrew Cohen's teachings on Evolutionary Enlightenment during a 10 day intensive. As you read the book you are not only interested and engaged in what Michael's experience and responses are going to be but you are also interested and engaged in where Andrew is going to go next in the teachings. As Michael moves back and forth between direct quotes of Andrew's teachings and his response to them the reader wants to know more about both. This is a true page turner! Reading Andrew's teachings moved the seeker in me to want to read more. Reading Michael's responses and experiences made me understand how very impersonal all our responses are. As he bared his interior I found it to be not so different from mine. Not only a wonderful book but also an enlightening experience!

Never has a book shaken up the spirituality thought process as this one. Just as most people thought they have found that level of spiruality that we seek to obtain, along comes Mr. Wombacher with his story of a new vision of enlightenment. His story of how his teacher, Andrew Cohen, has set a new vision on how his teachings can help the world today. This book is one of those that will have you thinking about your beliefs whether you it works for you or not. Just as religions are losing ground because they chose not to evolve, spirituality might be at the same crossroads. Does spirituality evolve or just stay the same? The fact that so many of the spirituality groups are not willing to see it as a possibility makes me want to investigate more. Andrew Cohen basically states that it will either work for you or it won't. He allows everyone to make their own decision.
