This review is from: Days Of Fire (Audio CD)
If you like heavy music (Eyehategod, Isis, Slayer, Mastodon, and Sabbath to name a few) then you will like this cd. Easily the best cd I've picked up this year. I've listened to it at least 50 times. It's one of those cd's that you just don't get sick of for some reason.
I'm not really good at describing music in terms of it's sound and how it relates to it's influences etc. I'll try to give a brief overview and let you be the judge when you finally hear it.
If you have heard their first cd Trust, you know it's a great cd but this time they upped the ante in a big way. Trust mixed sludgey heavy songs with a lot of technical metal with industrial noise elements.
Days of Fire runs the gammut but leans much more to the metal end of the spectrum while introducing a lot of melody, vocally and musically. This is definitely a cd you will want to bang your head to and throw horns while listening. Jason and Brian continue to trade vocal duties but Jason actually does some singing on this one which is a great addition. Jason's bass tone is massive and brian's guitars are fantastic. Eric's drumming is tight.
There isn't a weak song on the album. The first five tracks are simply amazing. Like I said earlier, I have a hard time describing exactly what they sound like. They're heavy, they rock, they just sound epic.
However, when you hit the sixth though you'll be checking your cd player because they might throw you for a loop. A song called Sea of Tranquility is definitely a new direction for the band, it's a slow hauntingly beautiful song that brings to mind Mogwai in it's quiet dynamics and mood.
Another one that will take you by surprise is the eighth track called Blue. It's an acoustic bluegrass inspired song that I was really taken aback by. Then there is the final thirteen minute dirge track that just explodes at the end. It just goes to show the chops these guys have and how far they have come musically in the past few years.
I'm positive that most everyone who enjoys heavy music in one form or another will find plenty of reasons to like this cd. It really is an incredible effort and if you haven't heard these guys before I seriouly recommend picking this one up.
