EVE is astonishing
on May 22, 2013
I've been operational as a new EVE citizen for a little over two weeks now. Your take on EVE comes down to how far and how wide you care to cast your net.
EVE offers an astonishing array of possibilities. As others have noted, there is no 'leveling up', and no end game. It is yours to make what you can of it.
World domination and all it entails appeals to some.
The dark side of the will to power: the slaughter and destruction of others for its own sake, seems to draw more than a few to this venue. As does retribution against them. It's your decision. Pick your side - depending on your decision, you may eventually have me to deal with.
More than anything else, and for me at least, the sense of wonder that accompanies the exploration of a brilliantly conceived and executed environment is its own reward. And this is where the creators of the EVE universe really shine. There is a remarkable story of real depth behind it all that is still evolving, and better still, we all have a hand in it. Every human foible and grace is here on display. In that regard, EVE is a game that transcends the MMORPG genre with its own meta-game.
Plus, the game itself is drop-dead gorgeous, and the epic soundtrack is just icing on the cake.
You can play to your basest desires or live the courage of your convictions. Nothing else compares to the EVE universe. It makes everything else look crude and cartoonish.
Finally, it is game that requires you to think, even if you play it at its lowest level of sophistication. As one EVE citizen, J'Poll has noted, "When a WoW player leaves to return to WoW, the avg. IQ of both games rises." For those with little imagination of their own, or who choose not to think EVE will provide only frustration and boredom. In that respect, the game self-selects.
