Throat dry and raspy? Hands damp and clammy, perhaps even a little shaky? Don't worry, chances are you're not coming down with the flu but simply about to speak in public. Why the majority of us are rendered incapable when standing before a group of faces, even loving ones, is a mystery.

However, there is no mystery about the help for our podium petrification found in "10 Days To More Confident Public Speaking" by The Princeton Language Institute. After listening and practicing the useful tips found in this audio many will be almost as eloquent as reader Peter McHugh!

Listeners are shown how to be laid back, be comfortable with their own unique selves, and, of great importance, given insider tips on establishing an instant rapport with an audience. Suggestions as to how to integrate humor abound, as well as memorization techniques. Once a speaker knows the words he or she wants are firmly in mind, there is an added comfort and confidence.

Whether you going to be up before a local historical society or a judge, 10 DAYS TO MORE CONFIDENT PUBLIC SPEAKING is an invaluable aid.

Or at least not what I was looking for...but based on all the other reviews here, I thought it was. This book has a very limited audience in mind, namely those who are giving "speeches", not just regular, everyday presentations and meetings. The name of the book is deceiving, and so are the reviews. The first chapter is the only one that is moderately worthwhile if you're actually looking for tips on becoming more confident. Otherwise, it is simply a laundry list of ways to give big speeches; not helpful at all to the average joe who works in corporate america and just wants to feel more confident. I realize this is difficult to teach in a book, but the other reviewers gave the impression that I might garner some tidbits on this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, Interesting and Effective!, January 17, 2005

This is one of those helpful books that make us better both at work and at home. Although focused primarily on (professional) public speaking abilities it may also help us communicate more confidently and therefore more efficiently with our business partners and colleagues, guests on private parties, museum visitors, and tourist group members. The book is well structured, excellently written, easy readable - even for non-native English speakers! - and brimming with interesting observations, suggestions and instructions. You won't need, of course, 10 days to read the book. Quite the contrary: you'll read it within one day only, because it's short and interesting. Its best part, however, relates to its 'Day 5': 'Body Language and Voice' section is given in a very instructive way, so you can get its points immediately and implement the read directly.

I would say that '10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking' by Lenny Laskowski when combined with an another title - 'Persuasion: The Art of Influencing People' by James Borg - can be all professional literature you would really need in order to make yourself a better speaker, presenter and communicator.

The only reason that I didn't give the fifth star is a pretty poor quality of its paper. Any book is a physical product as well, isn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars 14 Days to audience applause, September 27, 2001

10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking is in the mold of the Ken Blanchard books. It's practical examples make it easy reading, easy to implement.

The first example I can think of was the section on voice mail, not only how to record your own voice mail message - content, pace & voice, but also how to leave a message so that your call is returned. It is working for me!

While getting more compliments on my limited speaking engagements is important, I am so much more at ease preparing for them. My 8 year old daughter has told me I'm not as "cranky" the day before I speak. That makes it all worth while, compliments, feeling better before and after speaking, and most important harmony in family life.

I can not say this book is a panacea for all public speaking concerns, it has been a catalyst for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, June 29, 2001

10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking is enjoyable to read and an excellent reference. The author's use of personal stories and many examples of effective speeches make this book fun and easy to read. He provides specific effective speaking tips throughout the book and I felt like I was learning without trying.

My favorite part of the book is the section on overcoming speaking anxiety. It described me and how I feel when I speak. This section contains lots of background information on speaking anxiety and the author's top ten tips for overcoming it.

I also enjoyed reading his top ten influential and memorable speeches. The book included excerpts from each speech which provided me both a quick history lesson and a reminder of how powerful a speech can be.

I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in public speaking whether you are a beginner or an experienced speaker

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, August 9, 2001

This review is from: 10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking (Paperback)
The author has done a fine job in making the content of this book relate to both wanabe speakers and those already in the field.

The three areas that I appreciated the most were: * the Internet sites given, * the Top Ten most influential and memorable speeches in history and * the Expect the Unexpected chapter.

The style of writing that the author uses makes you feel that you are there with him as he explains the situation. He has truly made this a book that you can learn from and put into action.

This will be a great resource for me to return to again and again.

It'a great gift to give as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Knowledge and Guide for the "Passionate Communicator/Public Speaker/Teacher", April 20, 2007
This review is from: 10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking (Paperback)
We all know that our first public speaking event was unsuccessful. However, after giving more and more and more speeches in school, business, church meetings etc., you build more confidence and your nervousness turns to confident energy. What I have learned is that in order to get over the nervousness as a beginner, you must PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and volunteer or participate in any communication topics that you can speak on. Basically "initiate communication" at all times in your environment such as school, work, on the phone etc. The other secret is to have patients, it takes time, but the more you practice and study the art of public speaking, you will become very proud of your increase confidence and speaking ability. This book should be your number 1 source to develop this skill. Read it atleast 3 times, while practicing and giving speeches before you purchase other public speaking book. I have several to increase my knowledge, but this one is the best. God bless you and you will do great. Remember - you develop this skill, you become very valuable and unique to yourself, your career and to others because this skill is very powerful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, July 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: 10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking (Paperback)
This book was so much fun to read and I found the conversational style very refreshing.

As far as public speaking, this book has already helped me tremendously.

As a college student, I was very nervous about public speaking because I had no idea how to go about preparing or practicing. This book walked me through the entire process and explained to me in simple terms and great example how to be better prepared for my next speech.

Thank you!
