Decent Information, but highly focused on the stay-at-home mom
on March 12, 2013
I came across a bargain deal on this book, so I decided I would download it and try it out. I did so, with mixed results.
I did structure my reading so that I read one chapter each day for 21 days. Each chapter is about three pages, plus an additional page follow up on a "mega project."
While the information in each of the chapters was okay and occasionally helpful, there were a couple of key factors that were very distracting to me.
First, the author seems to have assumed that the only readers of this book are women, so she used feminine pronouns and references. That's not really a problem, but some of the references included items about fixing your hair and doing your makeup. As a man with a shaved head, it was rather hard to relate.
Second, the references seemed to focus primarily around stay-at-home moms, with projects and tasks associated around that. That means that many of the recommendations included references to cleaning the house, organization, and planning around childrens' activities. Again, that's not really a problem if that's what you're looking for and expecting. However, the references to business tasks only seemed to refer to the work-at-home moms who run their own business or have complete flexibility in the work they do (such as talking about working early in the morning so that you can have more time available in the day for kids' activities). Even many of the work-from-home moms that I know do not always have that kind of flexibility - they may need to have a structured schedule to be available for client communications. The inclusion of directly work-related recommendations were a small percentage of the recommendations.
So, with those caveats, the book could be helpful for the stay-at-home mom either with no other job, or with a flexible at-home job (e.g. blogging, writing for publication, etc.). For my reference, I could only rate this as okay. There were a few helpful points, but many of the recommendations just were not relevant for me.
