Mexico before World War II,
By Waneta (Alexandria, VA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Days of Ofelia (Hardcover)
I just finished a copy of the 1942 edition of The Days of Ofelia. It's a beautifully written story about an American woman living in Mexico City in the 1930's (no years are mentioned, but the Spanish Civil War just ended, and WWII hasn't started). Ten-year-old Ofelia lives nearby with her large family in utter poverty, but her practicality and optimism carries her through. Ms. Diamant describes life in Mexico City, and in several smaller towns, with a certain affection without being patronizing.
