Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8?This title puts the Salem witchcraft trials in a historical context for young readers. It's written in an accessible format that features large typeface and small pen-and-ink illustrations on every page. Chapters discuss aspects of Puritan life in Massachusetts such as religion, making a living, and government. Only 2 of the 17 chapters are devoted solely to the Salem trials. For a more in-depth resource exclusively on them, direct children to Karen Zeinert's The Salem Witchcraft Trials (Watts, 1989). However, Roach's book does supply interesting material for students attempting to gain an understanding of the Zeitgeist of Puritan New England.?Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA

From Booklist

Gr. 4^-6. After discussing the Salem Witchcraft trials in one short chapter, this attractive volume explores the social history of the times to show the context that made such events possible. Topics include the law and punishment, magic, social status, clothing, food, household goods, occupations, recreation, common activities, government, and the political troubles leading to widespread tension and unrest. Readers will come away with a much fuller picture of who lived in Salem and how they lived. Small ink drawings decorate the pages, illustrating buildings and artifacts as well as the activities and beliefs of the people. This intriguing book offers an understanding of history that will be helpful to those studying colonial Massachusetts and, of course, the notorious trials. Carolyn Phelan

This review is from: In the Days of the Salem Witchcraft Trials (Hardcover)
As a Pagan, I wished to teach my two children about the Salem Witch Trials and chose this book as a jumping point. Never before have my children complained about being read to. The text is dry and boring. What's more, the author chooses to present witches as agents of Satan while making numerous excuses as to why christians murdered so many people (human sacrifices) in the name of their god. Needless to say, I trashed the book and have started teaching the history of the witch trials in Salem using adult sources as reference points.
