Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two fer containing a pair of album from the Southern rockers on one CD: Dog Days (1975) and Red Tape (1976). When they released Red Tape in 1976, the Atlanta Rhythm Section were at the brink of success. They achieved it the following year, when they nearly broke into the Top Ten, but they truly found their winning sound here. The blend of Soul, Blues, Country and Rock is melodic and appealing, rivaling the Marshall Tucker Band in terms of songwriting and sound. An impressive effort from a band beginning to find its feet. BGO. 2009. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars outstanding twofer, October 25, 2005

If the ABB was the band of the new south and it's hopes and dreams and Skynyrd was Bubba's band, the Atlanta Rhythm Section was the thinking mans Southern band. Albums full of smart tunes, an eye for detail and killer musicianship, these guys have been the most underrated southern band since their first days.

These two albums were pivotal in the bands development. Dog Days reflected the south they lived, in the musical forms they loved and the bands joy at making music. Songs such as the title tune, Boogie Smoogie Cuban Crisis and Crazy are just blinders and All Night Rain has been one of my favorite rainy night romance songs for 30 years.

Red tape opens with Jukin' which interpolates Bob Wills San Antonio Rose into the solo. Mixed Emotions musically points toward the success of the next record's So Into You, Free Spirit examines relationships in context of social change and Another Man's Woman just ought to be illegal its so good.

These CD's have been unavailable for a long time so get them before they go away again.

These two records ( from 1975 & 76 ) mark ARS' artistic peak. " Champagne Jam " followed and was their biggest commercial success, but it was downhill from there. This is southern boogie that is well-written and head and shoulders above Lynyrd Skynyrd or their contemporaries. Revisit ARS at their best with this pair of records well mastered and dropped onto one CD.

If you're looking for a reminder of how great the Atlanta Rhythm Section was, start with this CD. The first album Dog Days wasn't quite as good as I remember, but I needed some of those songs for the car, like Boogie Smoogie & Dog Days. The songs Bless My Soul & Silent Treatment are an excellent prelude to the album Red Tape, which is why I bought this CD. There's not a bad song on this album, & half of them I remember from the radio when it was out. Heck, not just when it was out--I heard Another Man's Woman playing on a bookstore's sound system outside & realized I had to have that album now. Listen to Oh What a Feeling or Mixed Emotions & try to get that song out of your head. A Top 20 album of all time, at least one of the Top 20 Underrated albums of all time.
