a great beginner's book on juice fasting,
By A Customer
This review is from: 3 Days to Vitality: Cleanse Your Body, Clear Your Mind, Claim Your Spirit (Paperback)
This book gives the reader the opportunity to have a little bit of everything. In addition to a structured and detailed fast, Serure provides the reader with many different exercises to invigorate, soothe, and release the spiritual and emotional selves, as well as the physical. The only criticisms would be that at times, it was necessary to hunt through the book for a certain piece of information (e.g. finding out when it's best to take apple cider vinegar), thus giving the book a disorganized feeling. Also, although Serure mentions many things, she fails to give details on how one might find out more if desired (e.g. mentioning longer fasts are better in the beginning of the season, but not giving any advice or recommendations on longer fasts). Lastly, as a beginner with fasting myself, I went through the program carefully, following every detail as closely as possible. It would have been helpful if Serure had given some general lists of substitutes or things that are acceptable to put in the juice/broth. Otherwise, this book was wonderful. It leads the reader gently through a brief juice fast with not only the necessary plans and details, but enough information to excite and inspire anyone to improve lifestyle and eating habits.

Not just about fasting,

If you are a beginner like myself, this book may not give you everything you're looking for... There is a lot of information about fasting and fairly detailed guidelines on how to do a fast, but there is also a large amount of info about spiritual healing and other subjects that kind of turned me off. The information was a bit confusing for me to sort through (not well organized). I was looking for more of a text book and this is more like a chicken-soup-for-the-faster kind of book. I found a little bit more science in Paavo Airola's books as well as some helpful info in a pamphlet on cleansing that I got from one of the Wild Oats chain supermarkets. For some general information and one of many daily guides to a short fast this is an ok book, but if you're looking for more hard facts or need more instruction, I would check this out at the library, and use it as a supplement to other more focused books.

This book changed my life. When I first picked up the book at a Whole Foods store in March 2002, I was in need of *something*...but didn't know what. While at the store, I read the first page of the book and nearly started crying. This told me there was something in those pages I really needed to read... and I don't regret my decision to purchase it. In fact, several years later I loaned the book to a friend that seemed to be in need of *something* - and never got it back. So, I re-purchased it here on Amazon. I have completed this book's 3-Day program 3 times over the past 7 years, plus another 10 or so fasts and juice-fasts.
This book: The author brings you on a journey of self discovery and healing. She asks you to journal, to sit silently, to stretch, to reach inward and find You. Fasting is truly a journey of letting go - of food addictions, of the need to consume, of the need to digest, of the need to hold on to emotions and all the other crap that we hold on to every single day of our lives just because we are human and sometimes we "get stuck," both literally and figuratively. When I first picked up this book in 2002, I was not at the beginning of my spiritual journey, but the book still spoke to me. Completing the 3-Day juice-fast was a huge boost in my journey toward self-discovery. And the book/program continues to serve as a mechanism of bringing me back to center anytime I begin feeling a little "off." Now, I juice every morning as part of my life. This book is more of a program for cleansing the body, mind and spirit - whether you are a seasoned faster or a novice. The recipes are good, overall. I especially like the desert ones. :-) Unfortunately, my very first time using the book, I got SO sick to my stomach from the green juices on Day 1. They tasted horrible, made me gag, made me want to throw up actually (I held my nose as I drank the juice so I couldn't taste it - yes, I was determined)... BUT, by Day 2, the same exact juice smelled and tasted GOOD and didn't bother me at all! Sounds weird, right? Not at all - it's very normal. As you detox, the properties of green juices will upset you less and less. So, my advice is: Drink at least SOME of the green juice on Day 1, even if the smell and taste make you feel sick. Just take deep breaths as you drink it, and drink a little water afterward...both will help calm your stomach. Day 2 should be better. Day 3 even better. Also, for the novice juice-faster: 1. Remember to do a pre-fast, and ALWAYS break the fast correctly (the author discusses this in the book)! You can damage your body if you don't!! 2. The author recommends you do this fast during an extended weekend where you have no commitments - no work, no family obligations, etc. Whenever I do this juice-fast book/program, that's exactly what I do. I strongly recommend it, for the full effect. If you have a family (partner, kids, etc.), make sure they know what you are up to and gain their support. I don't recommend cooking meals for/with your family while fasting. The program can take a lot of planning in the beginning, but it is worth it. I wish each of you an enlightening journey. |
