"In the Arms of Love" is an exceptional 1966 release. The first half features romantic ballads (including the Henry Mancini-penned title track) set against lush, string-filled backdrops -- perfect for the Williams purr. But the real gems of this album are the last six tracks, which get delightful bossa nova and samba treatments that compliment Andy's ultra-cool vocals perfectly. The congas on "A Man and a Woman" are a knockout, as is Dave Grusin's chic, uptempo arrangement of "All Through the Night." Because Williams' light touch is so well suited to this material, it is unfortunate that he did not devote an entire album to Brazilian-influenced material, as Sinatra did with Antonio Carlos Jobim (Williams and Jobim did record two Jobim tunes for Andy's 1966 "The Shadow of Your Smile" LP).
Days of Wine And Roses is a rather uneven set but a highly enjoyable one. It contains the Williams standards: Can't Get Used To Losing You, May Each Day and the title song.
The covers: I Left My Heart In San Francisco ranks up there with Tony's, Darin's, and Sinatra's. What Kind Of Fool Am I ranks up there with Sammy's, and I Really Don't Want To Know is heartfelt.
Andy takes Falling In Love With Love for a swing and it's swingin' fun, When You're Smiling is a great cover of a popular song, and You Are My Sunshine starts off great, but is ruined with annoying background singers and Andy harmonizing with himself. It could have been a lot better, and one wonders what Sinatra could have done with it.
Exactly Like You and It's A Most Unusual Day are great swingin' fun too. My Coloring Book is an interesting ballad that grows on the listener.
In The Arms Of Love is a must for the title track alone, one of my favorites by Andy and this was probably his last decent album of material in the 60s.
There's great bossa nova stuff here like The Face I Love, Sand And Sea, So Nice, Pretty Butterfly and the classic A Man & A Woman. The ballads are as good as Andy can make them, but Here's That Rainy Day, Remember and The Very Thought Of You were done definitively by Sinatra. And We Were Lovers and If I Love Again, along with the title song are the better ballads here, and are my favorites on the album.
All in all, this double album CD contains two of Andy's best albums and is a must own for his fans.
