Book Description

June 2, 2010
Days With My Father is a son's photo journal of his aging father's last years. Following the death of his mother, photographer Phillip Toledano was shocked to learn of the extent of his father's severe memory loss. He started a blog on which he posted photographs and accompanying reflections on his father's changing state. Through sometimes sad, often funny, and always loving observations, we follow Toledano as he learns to reconcile the elderly man living in a twilight of half memories with the ambitious and handsome young man he occasionally still glimpses. Days With My Father is an honest and moving reflection about coming to terms with an aging parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Instant Favorite June 17, 2010
By Brinn
Format:Hardcover
A heart warming beatiful photo book, the images are brilliant and the writings are deep and personal. A brief story of man's relationship with his father during his final days, One of my favorite books of the last decade. I think the author is certainly one to watch out for. A very unique style yet a courageous form of photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, highly emotional, amazing. June 19, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Rarely do photo essays tell such a succinct story. "Days With My Father" is heartbreaking, beautiful, poignant and hilarious at once. Toledano's photography is both artful and personal, loose yet meticulously composed. His prose is all that and more. Heart-bearing poetry with brutal honesty. Anyone with an aging parent or friend in their lives needs to "read" this book again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring some tissue. December 30, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book arrived a few days before the order date in pristine condition. Even though I read this online first(and bawled like a baby), I still felt moved when I read it again with my solid copy (and bawled like a baby). The writing is very simple and short. The author lets his pictures do most of the talking and they have a lot to say (and make you cry). Each time I've gone through I discover something new (I cried less when I was 13 and found my cat in the dryer on Christmas morning) and wonderful about this book and the people it's about. While it feels weird saying I thoroughly enjoyed (Seriously, Christmas morning! just after the presents!) a book about a son relaying the final days of his father, who has severe dementia, I feel it is accurate (I miss you, Simba!). Don't pass up this book. It will make you appreciate your life, and everyone you know (I need a drink.).
