Yes, I can personally attest to the truth of the suggestion by Mr. Robert W. Ward above: M was known to Paul Brunton as Brother M and his name was definitely Thurston, an American, a true gentleman in every sense, a true enlightened Adept, which to P.B. in this context was the highest praise, and an Iroquois (trained by Iroquois Medicine Men in Indian Medicine Ways; I don't know which of the Six Nations tribes, that was never specifically mentioned and I did not think to ask). References to any other identity for this deliberately anonymous writer are simply mistaken. Thurston died before my wife was born but she knew Paul Brunton very well indeed (her mother was married to him for seven years and she remained very close to him for the last twenty years of his life after that) and Brother M was often discussed as P.B.'s first and always beloved teacher and one of the most profound, direct and continuing influences on his life and private spiritual practices. Those who say otherwise are misinformed. And yes, the other books you mentioned--The Lord God of Truth Within also by M; and Michael Juste's the White Brother; P.B.'s son Kenneth Thurston Hurst's A Personal Journey (which does not represent the whole story about Paul Brunton or Brother M. I'm afraid); are all as you say. There is also an annotated version of Le Comte de Gabalis translated, edited and annotated by brother M which my wife is dying to get hold of; have you come across it? P.B. had it but it is not now in our possession, though his original copies of brother M's books, with his personal inscription to P.B., are. Thanks for clarifying this misunderstanding for the general public, a much needed correction.

Yes, this is a profoundly important, and still relatively little known book, but it might be of interest to know that it is not necessarily connected with Master Morya. M was the pen name of an American ex-pat living in London called Thurston. He was an artist and painter of lacquer furniture, working for a large department store, travelling the world to undertake commissions. An advanced mystic and occultist, he was one of the early teachers and influences of Dr Paul Brunton, the author of a number of books on yoga, east-west wisdom and spirituality, including the invaluable and indispensable sixteen volume Notebooks, published posthumously. Anyone inspired by The Dayspring of Youth, and it's sequel The Lord God of Truth Within (incorrectly attributed to Nicholas Roerich on Amazon, by the way) would do well to read Dr Brunton's books. If you want to know more about Mr Thurston, there's an interesting book called The White Brother, by Michel Juste, sadly out of print now, and probably quite hard to find, but not impossible. And if you want to see what Thurston looked like, there's a photograph, as well as some biographical detail, in Paul Brunton: A Personal View by Kenneth Thurston Hurst.
