4.0 out of 5 stars It works well but can't be calibrated, November 11, 2010
This review is from: Dayton 1UHG3 Humidifier Control, Plug In, 120 V (Misc.)
Pros:
It works well. It keeps your plug-in humidifier or vaporizer running until the room humidity reaches whatever percent you set.

Cons:
-There is no way to calibrate it. However, this can be overcome by testing it and then adding or subtracting the difference when setting what humidity you want. On arrival mine was only a couple of percentage points higher than my properly calibrated hygrometer.
-It needs to be placed about half way up to the ceiling and away from anything producing heat in order to get a good reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good idea and it works!, January 27, 2012

Rather than buying an overpriced humidifier with a built-in humidistat that doesn't work, I opted for this. The built-in humidistat, NEVER works, and it's been my experience and that of others. Simply state, it is a poor engineering decision because the device can never get an accurate measurement of humidity if it is so close to the source, yet the stupid manufacturers keep on doing it, merely to jack up the price, and the end users have the common complaint of the humidifier having only two states: either on all the time or off all the time.

This one solves the problem. It comes out of the factory quite accurate. I checked it against a couple of hygrometers I trust, and when I placed them at exactly the same spot, the measurement of this device was spot on.

Couple of tips I give other users:
1) Relative humidity measurement can be affected significantly by the position of the measurement device in the room. That's not only because humidity distribution may not be uniform in the room, but more importantly because relative humidity depends largely on the temperature, and you'll have temperature differences between different spots in the room, especially in cold winter when you're heating the room. So, place the humidifier controller in an outlet as close as practical to the point where you want to regulate humiditiy, and definitely not close to your heater.

b) Given how sensitive the measurement is to temperature, be carefuly if you place the device against a cold wall. Again, very possible during winter, if the wall is not internal to the house, but rather a wall that separates your room from the outside. If this happens, then know that the device will be measuring relative humidity thinking that the temperature is actually lower than it is inside your room, which causes the humidity measurement to be higher than it should, it could cause the device to turn off the humidifer before the desired humidity is reached. If this placement is unavoidable, the solution is:
a. Plug the device where you want.
b. Give it a few minutes to stabilize and take an accurate read.
c. Compare its measurement against that of a hygrometer you trust that is placed at the point where you want to regulate humidity.
d. The difference in the reading between the two is a good rough estimate of the amount of correction you need to do when setting the humidifier controller. E.g. if your trusted hygro reads 35%, and this controller reads 42% (because it is placed at a non-ideal position), and you want to improve your humiditiy to 40%, then you set your controller to 47%.

This is exactly what we needed; we use humidifiers all winter and it really helps with our sinuses. However even though we got the smallest output humidifiers we always used to have condensation on the windows in the morning (and sometimes on the walls & ceilings) and a little bit of mold was growing on the window edges. Ever since we hooked up to these fully adjustable humidistats we have perfect humidity control. It's been 1/2 a winter so far and we've been benefiting from the humidifiers and have not had condensation and no mold. Definitely recommend these!

I bought this to hook to a pond fogger to raise the always extremely low humidity in my home.
It works marvelously. Like others, I did have to set it about 10% higher than what I wanted
my more precise hygrometer to read. I find no fault other than the price hurt a little.-ouch-
Now if only the pond fogger's would last longer I'd stay floating on a cloud of humidity heaven.

I plugged in a humidifier, rotated the dial to 50% humidity, and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

4.0 out of 5 stars seems accurate, January 8, 2012
This review is from: Dayton 1UHG3 Humidifier Control, Plug In, 120 V (Misc.)
living in a radiator urban apartment the air gets very dry during the winter so i always have a humidifier going. the humidistat on my vornado 40 failed soon after i bought it, and my taylor humidistat seems to register 10% too low, so i needed both a better humidistat and humidifier controller, and Dayton has come to my rescue. for $50 I could have just bought a new humidifier that would last me a few years, but figured this Dayton should last a lifetime and my wet wick fan based vornado otherwise worked fine. the setting dial on this unit is a bit cumbersome, but I guess it's designed for you to "set it and forget it".
the reason I deducted a star from my review is because unlike most thermostat/humidistat this one lacks a setting to widen the trip range. say you want 40% humidity - the Dayton will go on at 39% and off at 41%, but a wider trip setting by say 1% would have it go on at 38% and off at 42% so your Humidifier does not cycle as much. If you suffer the same cycling issue, I suggest adding a long extension cord between your Humidifier and the Dayton so the distance between them within the same room is as great as possible. also don't put this by doorways, windows, or where you may walk by a lot as to not trip it more than needed.
however, don't let this issue deter you from buying this Dayton. cycling is less of an issue with humidifiers as they are usually just fans and heating elements. DEhumidifiers which are compressor based - really need a wider trip range since cycling them too often can shorten their use life.
while this unit's round edges look appealing, IMHO it has a simple design flaw; the plug is behind the unit, where it should have been to the side - here's why. if you plug this into a wall outlet near the floor, you won't get a good humidity reading since it's more drafty down there. a better height for any thermostat/humidistat is chest height, about the height of a wall switch. if this unit had it's plug in and out on it's sides, you could then hang it on your wall at the proper height to display the humidity%, and simply run an extra extension cord to your wall outlet. if you do a search on amazon for "humidistat plug" you'll notice all the other analog units costing twice as much have plugs on their side for such wall mounting purposes.
but with the Dayton at a $50 price point and digital read%, I'm probably being petty ;^) let's just hope the built in switch relay holds up over the long term.

This unit keeps the humidity level within 1% of setpoint. Whereas the built in sensor of the de-humidifier kept the unit running almost all the time. Well worth the money. Easy to set up. 5 minutes from box to full operation.
