About the Author

Tony Mitton is a widely anthologized children's poet, as well as a teacher and performing poet. His Royal Raps won the 1997 Nottinghamshire Libraries/Dillons Children's Book Award. His recent collection of poetry, Plum, won the Publishers Weekly 2003 Cuffies Award for Best Book of Poetry. Tony teamed with illustrator Ant Parker on several books, including Dazzling Diggers, Roaring Rockets, and Terrific Trains.

 

Ant Parker studied drawing and printing at the Bath Academy of Art in England and has taught papermaking, printing and bookbinding workshops for children. Toddlers and parents around the globe have discovered the irresistible appeal of his wacky cartoon characters in Flashing Fire Engines, Terrific Trains, Dazzling Diggers, and Roaring Rockets. I purchased this book for my curriculum at school for my 4 year olds. But my grandson loves it so much that it hasn't made it to school yet. It is one of his daily favorites that we have to read multiple times. I love the informational components (he now knows what tracks, pistons, jacks, etc. are and what they do). I also love the rhyming component. It is a wonderful story especially if your child loves machines.

My son knows this book off by heart. He is nearly two, and he makes me read it over and over. He says the last word of every rhyming page, and is reduced to hysterics by the squelching and glugging comments. He has also learnt all the technical terms for different parts of diggers and he is constantly pointing them out on our journeys.Thank you Tony Mitton and Ant Parker for the hours of fun we have with your brilliant book. I have just ordered Roaring Rockets, and I cannot wait for it to arrive.

Clear, simple pictures accompanied by short, descriptive rhymes puts this book in the top ten for my 2 year old. It helps give a child a feel for language, particularly for synonyms and rhythms. There is sufficient detail for curious questions and bold statements ('a RED digger'). The book playfully teaches the child to match implements to actions.
