Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Building on the success of her Independent Music Award-winning second release Sube Azul, vocalist Sofia Rei returns with the spellbinding De Tierra Y Oro, co-produced by Fabrice Dupont. Rei describes the album as a series of "philosophical wanderings" -- songs that draw on a wide range of South American folkloric influences and bracingly modern sounds, with Rei's powerful voice in the forefront.

Review

As the Argentine singer Sofía Rei led her multinational band, the passion and clarity with which she assayed a tricky mix of South American rhythms and jazz-inflected harmonies made clear why she has been embraced by New York City audiences from Carnegie Hall to the hippest downtown haunts. --Phil Lutz, New York Times

one of the most versatile and in-demand singers on the New York music scene --Simon Calle, All About Jazz

...a potent combination that s like nothing else around --Kevin Convey, Boston Herald

What I really like about this is that it is an unabashedly acoustic recording. There are plenty of 'lounge' recording of South American music that try to marry electronic sounds with latina cool. This has latina cool to burn but is a fantastic, live-sounding session. The vocals are gorgeous, virtuosic. The horns sound like real horns. The trumpets trump. The saxophones sax. The percussion is bright and present. The standup bass sounds like a standup bass. It's the kind of recording you just don't hear that much today.

This is music that borrows from South American folk sounds, modern improvised jazz, and even a bit of pop music. My fave track is the fifth one, El Llorón, 'Weeping, as we gringos would say.' It's a melancholy fantasia for nylon stringed guitar and vocals. Gorgeous.

Really, if you have arrived here, just buy this. You'll love it. It will stand up to many, many a listen. Oh, it's sexy too.

All the songs are very well shaped pieces of art and the album has a very energetic flow. Sofia Rei sings with a fantastic range of colours, and with a lot of dynamic variation and such nice special notes that come from her jazz side (I guess). Her voice has so much possibilities! Her band consists of very fine musicians that all make their individual contributions in very imaginitive ways, far from any cliché. The bugel and trombone are really delicious. The more you listen to this album, the more you have to admire all the details.

I first heard Sofia completely by chance, live, in a small divey bar in Brooklyn. Her voice and words have a way of taking you far, far to the south where people seem to live with a beat in their step.

This studio album does exactly the same - it transports me to another place. I listen to it while making dinner... it's the perfect accompaniment to cooking a nice dinner for a friends. Check it out.

Very happy to add this to my collection! Great, contemporary Tango music. Love Sofia Rei's voice and the infusion of energy this CD brings.

Sofia Rei's 3rd album, De Tierra Y Oro, is to me her best work yet, and shows that she is on her way to total greatness! The sophistication in the lyrics, melodies and production, the poetry that touches me and leaves me wandering (like when I listen to Silvio!), all the sounds, colors and atmospheres that permeate through this journey of songs...You strongly feel the South American folklore base, but the pop and jazz elements make it relevant to my personal here and now. I've been playing it daily for months, and I hope she's already writing the next one!
