DeGowins is the end all be all of physical exam,
This review is from: DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
After using Jarvis and Bates in college, I happened to find a recommendation to use DeGowins instead. Degowins, despite its small size, packs a large punch compared to the usual fare. Its about the size of a nursing drug guide and can be easily stored away for clinical reference in your bag. It contains descriptions and drawn graphics of procedures and possible differential diagnosis for conditions. The index is thorough. Overall, its a great purchase for nursing and NP students.

This review is from: DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
I am a nurse practitioner who has used this book over the last ten years. I have found it to be essential in building my knowledge of differential diagnosis and clinical reasoning. It should be required reading for clinicians of any level and profession. The book's format is intuitive and clear. Clinical highlights are emphasized and written to facilitate easy memorizability. The newest edition provides a mobile download full-text reference.

This review is from: DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
This book was required for my physical assessment course, but after comparing it to Mosby's Physical Exam, I never opened it again. Mosby's provides more comprehensive information in an easier to read format.

As already said: Classic! Very technical, you'd be surprised to see how much information this little book carries.(although it's got almost 900 pages) very comprehensible, it's a bit hard keep focused after a while cause it's very compressed, lots and lots of info. I really don't know how it works for medical curriculum in US, I'm also suplementing it with McGee's Evidence Based Diagnosis and Swartz' Textbook of Physical Examination, and as a brazilian student I think I might wanna purchase a textbook of Internal Medicine, like Cecil's or Harrison's.
I didn't had time yet to compare it to my colleages' Mario Lopez or Celso Porto.

"Navicular vs. scaphoid" bone,
By Mary Vincent, PA-C (Kake, AK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
I wanted to comment on the book in general (excellent!) and a question about the use of "scaphoid" versus "navicular" for the carpal bone. I also wondered why both terms were used. "Scaphoid" comes from the Greek word for boat or skiff, "skaphe". "Navicular comes from the Latin word for boat, "navicula." I suggest that students use a good medical dictionary to look up confusing words. Dorland's Medical Dictionary is great for discovering the origins of these words!
