Book Description

Inspector Dekok October 1, 2004

“DeKok’s maverick personality certainly makes him a compassionate judge of other outsiders and an astute analyst of antisocial behavior.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Baantjer has created an odd police detective who roams Amsterdam interacting with the widest possible range of antisocial types. This series is the answer to an insomniac’s worst fears.”—The Boston Globe

“Baantjer’s laconic, rapid-fire storytelling has spun out a surprisingly complex web of mysteries.”—Kirkus Reviews

“DeKok is a careful, compassionate policeman in the -tradition of Maigret; crime fans will enjoy this . . .” —Library Journal

“It’s easy to understand the appeal of Amsterdam police detective DeKok.”—The Los Angeles Times

Renowned mystery author A.C. Baantjer brings to life Inspector DeKok in another stirring potboiler full of suspenseful twists and unusual conclusions.

In The Geese of Death, DeKok takes on Igor Stablinsky, a man accused of bludgeoning a wealthy old man and his wife. To DeKok’s unfailing eye the killing urge is visibly present in the suspect during questioning, but did he commit this particular crime?

All signs point to one of the few remaining estates in Holland. The answer lies within a strange family, suspicions of incest, deadly geese and a horrifying mansion. Baantjer’s perceptive style brings to light the essences of his characters, touching his audience with subtle wit and irony.

A.C. Baantjer is one of the most widely read authors in the Netherlands. A former detective inspector of the Amsterdam Police, his fictional characters reflect the depth and personality of individuals encountered during his 38-year career in law enforcement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but great mystery, October 24, 2004
This review is from: DeKok and the Geese of Death (Inspector Dekok) (Paperback)
Inspector DeKok of the Amsterdam Municipal Police is trying to get a confession out of Igor Stablinsky for the murder of rich and elderly Samuel Lion. The interrogation goes nowhere when a woman calls about some geese. When DeKok turns his back on Igor, the criminal tries to kill him with a tire iron. He fails and is put back in jail while DeKok and his partner Vledder visit Happy House Estate where the matriarch Isolde Bildijk demands the police arrest her servant. He bought strychnine and Isolde believes he is going to kill her geese.

They leave without arresting the man but soon return when all the geese die. Isolde tells them she fears her life is in danger and asks her family to stay and protect her. While DeKok is busy with geese Igor breaks out of jail and Isolde is one of the people they think he intends to kill. Three murders occur at Happy House, the servant and two of Isolde's nephews with Igor seen at the mansion. DeKok is under increasing pressure from his supervisors to find the killer before someone else dies.

This is a short but fantastic who-done-it with many viable suspects though obviously Igor leads the list and there are plenty of red herrings to keep readers interested in the story. DeKok is getting ready to retire but remains at least as good a police officer as he was in his younger days. The audience gets an armchair's view of Holland, particularly Amsterdam, where legalized drugs and prostitution differ from the rest of Europe and the United States. Baantjer is an excellent writer and this reviewer will look forward to his next police procedural.

I am a huge fan of the series and can no longer get it in a timely manner. (when I hear about new translations). It is an excellent story and the characters are well drawn. This book gives you a portrait of life and police work in an excellent way.Though based in Holland, the author is in the league of Agatha Christie and Ed McBain, Outstanding! The seller was on time and excellent as always, this was part of a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual Mother Goose tale, February 22, 2008
This review is from: DeKok and the Geese of Death (Inspector Dekok) (Paperback)

DeKok takes on Igor Stablinsky one more time.

"'I didn't kill him,' he shrilled. He leaned toward DeKok, his eyes bulging, the cords of his neck constricted. 'You hear me? Are you listening? I didn't kill him! Not me! the old man was already dead when I came in.'

"Dekok regarded him with a mild smile. He was well aware from previous interrogations, how tenacious Igor Stablinsky could be."

Dekok is considering retirement. But, geese and three people die at Happy House Estate. Stablinsky has escaped from prison. Dekok's superiors want the killings stopped.

Is Stablinsky telling the truth for once? Can he actually be innocent?

Join Dekok in this twisty, delightful police procedural and find out.
