Editorial Reviews

Review

Romantic horn-flecked waltzes (Be Still, Angelino), go-go Gypsy kickers (La Ner VLivsoinim), and some kind of new wave stroll (Almond Trees) are just some of the seamless swirls of low-rent loft rock and Spanish-crooned sunset laments here that surprise at each turn. --Eric Davidson, CMJ

It's an arcane but refreshing alchemy - sometimes brooding and lovelorn, sometimes joyous and danceable. --Brad Frenette, National Post

[Here] comes Spanish/Jewish/Brooklyn mash that is Daniel Saks' visionary band DeLeon. At times rocking the Casbah (La Serena), sometimes channeling David Byrne (Almond Trees), and sometimes just wonderfully weird (La Vida Do Por El Raki), this is one band to behold. --Toph One, XLR8R

Product Description

DeLeon plays 15th-Century Spanish indie-rock infused with the deeply mysterious and entrancing cadences of the Sephardic Jewish tradition. Their music, birthed in Spain before the Inquisition and raised in pre-WWII Italy, has finally reached maturity in modern-day Brooklyn. DeLeon's sound evokes references to Caf Tacuba, Animal Collective, and Talking Heads. The band has performed with Balkan Beat Box, Dengue Fever, Los Campesinos, and Ozomatli.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical... A Gem and I don't say that lightly! July 22, 2009
Format:Audio CD
I'd never heard of Deleon before the Gogol Bordello show last night in Omaha NE. (07/21/09)

I stopped counting the genres blended into their sound, but I identified Surf, traditional spanish, shepardic jew, jazz (esp. Davis), fusion, acid rock, some spanish subgenres like ranchera... and even a bit of country in some of the 3-way vocal harmonies.

Live is indescribable, but trust me when I say that the album DOES THE LIVE SHOW JUSTICE. It's genre bending, leans on the rock side of things and will both make you dance as well as meditate. There's a little more in the disc as some techno and other electronic influences come forward a little more.

The album opener is both mysterious and sensual. The first song is a central thesis of their sound giving you a taste of everything the album has to offer. Download just the first two tracks if you're not sure, and if you like those, the whole album is a mix of these two songs.

Absolutely masterful. For fans of world music and I'd even say ANY kind of progressive rock... or any of the genres mentioned.

I try to make myself find flaws in everything.

Nothing.

Zero. Zilch. Wouldn't change a thing.

I recently saw DeLeon in San Francisco and was blown away. They create the most amazing sounds using an incredible variety of styles. If you haven't listened to them yet or bought this CD give them a try! You will thoroughly enjoy them! I can't wait for them to record their next album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mystic Rock July 20, 2009
Format:Audio CD
DeLeon were the openers at the Rock 'n Roll Hotel in Washington D.C. very recently. They definitely stole the show. Their lead singer had a lot of good energy eminating, and their pianist/keyboardist's voice is simply entrancing (i'm not sure whether she's a permanent member or just a featured guest member).

I can't begin to explain their sound. Definitely an eastern/western fusion (Sephardic rock is how the band refer to it); there was heavy use of, at least what sounded to me like, oriental scales which really added a mystical element to the music; great voice harmonizing and excellent (light) use of electronica. The best way to describe them would be: Sounds like colplay, with a heavy dose of zeppelin, tripping (lightly) on acid, performing in some other time... around th 1500s.

The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is because, in a couple of songs, they inserted a bit of sound fx which I thought slightly tarnished the sound.

Can't wait for the next album!
