I will say that I have tried quite a few consumer-end depp fryers in my time. This one makes hastening your death and hardening your arteries easier and cleaner than ever: the snap-shut lid, odor filter and incredibly cool oil release valve all make this deep fryer a far cry from the $20 excuse for an appliance you'd find at most department stores. And do follow the instructions to the letter: the instructions say use peanut oil for best results. Sadly, vegetable and canola oils just do not cut it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Fryer, June 18, 2002

I like the fryer; it's an upgrade from a Fry Daddy. The lid is nice, preventing oil from splattering all over the cabinets. The hose to drain the oil is a definite plus, and cleaning is FAIRLY easy, but takes a long time if you're thorough. The price is not bad... Also, the filters are quite expensive and hard to find. They don't sell them in the stores, and I don't think they're on Amazon either. Approximately $[money] for 3 charcoal, 3 odor & 6 basket filters. They recommend you change them every 10-15 uses, I think. The first several batches of food (including fries, Poppers, cheese sticks, popcorn shrimp, etc.) were just great. After that, the oil started spilling over. Customer service was not extremely helpful; just told me to use less oil (less would mean below the max/min line). I found that if I lower the basked EXTREMELY slowly (taking 30-60 seconds to fully lower it), the oil does not overflow. Keep in mind that if oil overflows, it not only causes a huge mess, but saturates those filters (fryer only comes with one of each) and pretty much ruins them. Also, forget the window; you can't see a thing with the condensation that builds up as soon as you lower the basket. On a positive note, the food comes out very crispy & tasty. The thermostat is right on (we checked it). It's easy for the kids (teenagers) to use. I would recommend it. Just keep extra filters on hand & lower that basket slowly!

I'm of two minds about this fryer. My primary consideration was temperature control, and secondarily (and not unrelated) safety, and lastly, ease of cleaning

I'd been frying with a deep pot and thermometer on the stove until now, and for temperature control this is great, especially if you're cursed with an electric oven with only a few burner temperatures! BUT, I do wish the thermostat went above 370 degrees, since there are items I'd prefer to fry at 380 or even 400. Hey, peanut oil will take it.

For safety, I was used to gently dropping a few items at a time into the oil pot by hand. The basket on this fryer will let you put items into the basket, close the lid, and lower the items. Usually nice, if not practical for all battered items; you can still put the lid up, and with the basket lowered or removed, place items in the oil by hand (violating the safety instructions and being VERY careful not to get your hand in the oil, of course!) I was surprised once with the "safe" method of making french fries, the "close the lid and lower the basket" method, that the oil bubbled so vigorously on encountering all the potatoes at once that the resulting froth actually came through the lid-top filter (for steam release) and bubbled onto the counter. I guess I feel better just sliding the fries in a few at a time by hand. But, with the closed lid and thermostat, an oil fire seems unlikely.

Cleaning isn't hard. You can re-use the oil (even store the fryer with the oil inside). When cool, oil drains from a convenient plug & 5" flexible tube so you can clean the (mostly) non-stick interior of the junk that sinks through the basket (the container doesn't come out, and you can't immerse it). Then either filter the oil and re-use it, or discard it when it's gone sour. But then, cleaning a simple pot wasn't hard, either.

So, the plusses are temperature control and ease of storage/setup. Are you going to use it often enough to make these benefits worth storing yet another bulky kitchen toy ? Then get one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice!, February 27, 2005
This review is from: DeLonghi D690UX Deluxe Cool Touch Fryer (Kitchen)
This is my second deep fryer. On the first one, the heating element burned out - bummer.

The DeLonghi is great. The outer shell stays cool to the touch so after using it, while the oil is still hot, I can move it off the counter, out of the way, without fear of burning myself.

The timer is a good feature. And the visual gauge for how long to cook the food is a plus.

When I go to clean it or change the oil, the rubber spout quickly removes the oil into a large pan I put into the sink. Then I dispose of it and wipe the inside thoroughly with paper towels. Viola! Ready to refill and get back to frying some yummy chicken tenders or crispy french fries or battered fish.

I will have to agree with another reviewer, however, that the filters are hard to find. In fact, I've never replaced mine due to that reason, but it still continues to work satisfactorily. And yes, I use peanut oil.

You'll like the DeLonghi. Buy one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in this price range, June 17, 2003

The 690 deep fryer is the best in this price range without a doubt. I bought one last month right here, after EXTENSIVE shopping and comparing of prices. It has the biggest basket of any of the 2.2 pound capacity listed fryers. Yes, I went to Sears, Target, Walmart, The Navy Exchange (I'm in the Navy), and
other stores and looked at them ALL. It has a drain hose to drain your oil, heats up great, cooks great, has a timer, window
to view your food, an excellent filter, and clean up is painless. I've deep fried onion in batter, like you get at some restaurants, chicken, Stuffed Jalepenos, Egg rolls, and even made Funnel cakes like at the carnival, all with out problems and a lot of greasy food. I highly reccomend this fryer if you are in the market for one. Oh yeah, the wife loves it too. Very little smell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used for over a year, and still great!, January 27, 2005

Although I have never owned another deep fryer before, I found that this one was wonderfully easy to use and clean (the spout isn't as easy as some people claim, but it's still much easier than conventional frying). I have been using it for over a year now, and it still works like a charm! I don't understand what some people are talking about when they say that it boils over. I have fried everything from tempura (wet & sticky battered veggies) to chicken wings, and it does a great job for them all. True, it's not going to be as good as the restaurant's fried goodies, but you can't expect a home product to fry things as well as the industrial ones...and besides, the restaurants sometimes use creamed shortnening to fry, which of course is going to taste a lot better!

All in all, I'm extremely happy with this fryer. When I was looking to purchase a deep fryer last year I was a little hesitant to buy this one because people said it boiled over and was dangerous, but I'm glad I ignored those reviews and purchased this one.

Pros: Easy clean-up, no smell, makes deep frying a cinch!

Cons: Pieces of burnt food get stuck in the draining nozzle sometimes (but that probably wouldn't happen if I cleaned it more often).

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed big-time, July 10, 2001

Received this as a gift from my husband. The appearance of the product does not make up for its inefficient cooking. I have used grand pappi fryer for 10 years and it holds more food than the 690 Delonghi. I have more control with the grand pappi as I can stir the fries around which will keep them from sticking together. The 690 will probably be better when it is used for a small amount of food or if I decide to use it without the basket. Just does not cook fries nearly as well as the Presto model I have owned. Anyway the only reason it gets 2 stars is that it is "safe" to use as compared to the presto model.

All in all, go with the Presto line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Fryer!!, November 8, 2004
This review is from: DeLonghi D690UX Deluxe Cool Touch Fryer (Kitchen)
I've had several fryers and this one is by far the best of the bunch. I like the temp gauge on the front and the mechanics are easy to use. A fryer is a fryer, but the clean up on this one makes it the best. Who'd of thought of a tube to drain? It's so simple, the other manufactures missed the boat. After the oil has cooled, I drain it out into an old container. Then fill the cooker up with hot soapy water and drain into the sink. The fryer cleans itself! No tedious wiping or scrubbing. The entire lid comes off and it and the basket go into the dishwasher (take the filters out first of course). I've had this cooker for over a year now and use it at least once a month if not more. It makes frying fun and easy. Downside - the filters are a bit expensive. Replacement filters were hard to find (I found them on the internet) and 6 filters were $18. But other than that, this fryer is the best of the bunch for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent deep fryer., December 18, 2001
This review is from: DeLonghi D690UX Deluxe Cool Touch Fryer (Kitchen)
I have been searching for a good deep fryer and finally found one. The Delonghi D690 is excellent. It looks nice and it does not feel flimsy.

The timer is a good feature although it feels like a last minute add-on. The tube for emptying the oil is very helpful. I think it is patented because this is the only fryer that had one during my research.

The temperature setting is not flimsy as the majority of the fryers out there.

The only bad thing about this product is that it has Teflon non-stick coating on the sides of the pan. The bottom is not coated so I guess it is not going to be a cancer hazard since it is the bottom where the heat is generated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Person, February 13, 2003
This review is from: DeLonghi D690UX Deluxe Cool Touch Fryer (Kitchen)
Hi, I purchased this deep fryer and absolutely love it. I was curious while shopping on line if these reviews were real..well let me tell you that I am a real person and this product works very well. I had purchased a T-Fal and it didn't work as well as this one. It gets hot very fast, has a very large basket, and is easy to operate. This is a must buy and believe me because I am a real person.
