was grand for a very short time,

This item, affectionately named R2D2, worked like a champ with all the bells and whistles, well, actually lights and dials for about 5 weeks and then just stopped. ... Thus I'm profoundly disappointed - and now without any grinder. In fact, given its short life, the 2 star rating is incredibly generous.

This is a great little grinder. The first thing I noticed about it is that it's deep. My old Salton grinder was extremely shallow, so it was impossible to get the grounds out without spilling all over the place. I had no such problems with this grinder. The grounds tend to spin off to the side of the grinder. When I am done I tap it against the table a few times, and they fall into the center will. I can then transfer the grounds without any problems. I am also able to get almost all the grounds out, unlike the Salton. Nice features include a tuck-away cord and a cap that allows you to meaure how many cups you are grinding for. A couple of features I have questions about: one is that there is a very short time between "coarse", "medium", and "fine". Could a couple of seconds really make the difference? Secondly as I mentioned before the grounds tend to spin off to the side away from the blade. I suppose this could be a feature of the device (spun off grounds could indicate they're "done"). It does, after all, ground the coffee beans extremely well, and I never had any problems with the grounds thave have spun off.

Best small grinder,

To grind my spices fresh, I have gone through many coffee grinders and was never satisfied with any until I discovered DeLonghi coffee grinder. The blades are so low, close to the base that no spice, even as tiny as a cardamom, escapes. The spices are ground very fine or coarse if you wish. I highly recommend this grinder for spices. I have not used it for coffee beans.

Best thing next to a burr grinder,

I've had this grinder going on 5 years and have never had a problem with it. Yes, you have to hold the button down, but its easily done while wrapping your hand around the whole unit. It gets fresh beans to a coarse grind in under 10 seconds. Another 10, and you're at espresso fine. The cup has measurement indicators on the side which are nice. I've used the espresso grind in one of the mass-market espresso machines pretty often, and its just fine for home use. I just started getting into french press makers, so I now also stop just before the coarse light comes on (about 8 seconds) for the right grind, and it works just great. I still may get a burr grinder, but only because I'm curious and getting into the press pot big time now. Highly recommend them.
People complain of this grinder making a mess. I'm not sure how. The whole machine is small enough with an ergonomic design for gripping, that I just turn it over and pour the grinds directly into the brewer's filter, or into a sealed container for later use. To make sure all the grinds comeout, I just smack the whole thing down on the counter two times, all of it loosens up, and out it comes. Been doing that for 4 years, and its held up just fine.

Worst grinder I've ever used,
By Charley C "lissener" (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews

--and I've used a LOT of grinders. VERY badly designed, and the "custom" thing is a gimmick and a sham: it's a standard rotary grinder. They just added flashing lights and extra buttons, and made it look bulkier. Every day was a misery dealing with this thing: it's designed so that you have no choice but to spill grinds all over the place when you use it.

Stopped working within a month,
This review is from: DeLonghi DCG39 Electric Grinder, 2.36-Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
I read all the reviews (including the ones that said it stopped working), but it still decided to go for this. Was tempted given that I needed it to grind spices, and there were some good reviews.
Was a bad mistake - it stopped working within a month like the reviews mention. Called up customer support - can ship it back, and mail a return payment so that they can give us a new one. However, that would apparently cost about $18 for the shipping back and forth making it totally worthless. I'm not going near this brand again across the board - there's plenty of other competitors to choose from.

This is a great grinder and the resulting grounds smell so delicious. The ability to select coarse, regular, and fine grind is absolutely the best feature. The only reason it's not getting 5 stars is because the cord is a little short.

Works great, but not what I wanted,

This review is from: DeLonghi DCG39 Electric Grinder, 2.36-Ounce Capacity (Kitchen)
Well, the grinder I wanted was a burr grinder, and this isn't one. I thought it was because it can grind to different levels or "coarse-ness", but that is because you just grind longer. I kept it anyway. Now the good:
The unit is very quiet as far as coffee grinders go; I do not have to worry about waking up the kids having my morning coffee. Also, it does not generate ANY static on the grounds, which is a real pain with other grinders. I would have given it 5 stars, but I was a bit unhappy about the lack of info about the type if grinder that it is.

Item worked for 1 minute before breaking. Very difficult to get the correct grind. Definitely an item to keep away from. Am returning as defective.

We've had the DeLonghi grinder for almost three years. It still works perfectly! We're especially pleased that it's a very clean grinder. Comes with a one year warranty although we never had to use it. Would definitely purchase again.
