2.0 out of 5 stars Lack of quality controll, June 18, 2005
This review is from: DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump (Kitchen)
New, out of the box, I turned this dehumidifier on and what a noise it made.

I removed the cabinet from around the unit and found that the fan blades were striking the top of the compreser. Because the threads of two of the three bolts that hold the compresser in place were stripped and the nuts could not be tightened down on those bolts thus the compresser leaned over to get itself under the fan blades. I added washers to the bolts so that the nuts didn't have as far to go to tighten and re-applied the nuts which pulled the compresser upright and now the fan blades don't hit. The person who installed those compresser nuts had to know they had stripped the bolts but sent it out to the customer anyway.

Now, two days later and the pump doesn't pump.

I've written DeLonghi telling them that I will ship the unit at my expense to either DeLonghi or Amazon, their choice but that I wanted my money back.

I'll keep you posted.

Pete

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump (Kitchen)
Despite the negative review of this product, I decided to try it since it had all the features I was looking for. Especially the pump. I bought this for my Mom who recently moved and the basement was damp and smelly. The previous owner left a Sears dehumidifier but it did not remove a drop of water from the air. I had an old Edison one that I lent my Mom. It worked fine but if you didn't put the bucket in the exact proper position, it would overflow. Since my Mom is a senior citizen, I wanted one that would automatically pump the water into the utility sink she had in the basement. So, this Delonghi met this important criteria to me.

After about three weeks of use, I have nothing but praise for this product. It is very quiet and has a long hose. It can pump the water up to ten feet high and it does this magnificently. You can also program it and adjust the amount of humidity you want to remove.

The basement no longer smells and you can set this dehumidifier up and forget about it. It removes a lot of water within a short period of time (depending on the humidity level you set it for and the amount in the air) and then shuts off when it reaches the setting. Since we got it we have not had to even concern ourselves with it at all. There was absolutely no problem setting it up. I would recommend this product to anyone.

I originally bought this unit because it claimed to be quiet. Quiet doesn't matter if it doesn't work. The first unit ran for 2 days and collected only a cup of water, while my older unit on the other side of the basement fills in 3 days. The second unit keeps freezing up. It would blow out super hot air and the humidistat would display an unusually high %; when you turn it off, the coils would melt and drip water. The box claims that it has a self deice cycle, but it did not work. The box also claims it's good for basements because it can work at temps as low as 50deg. Their tech support said that at 70deg. you need to set it to 50% or higher or it will freeze, and the deice cycle can not be relied upon. My basement smells pretty bad at 45% and higher. My new Frigidair works great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't count on the pump, June 4, 2006
This review is from: DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump (Kitchen)
Bought this unit 2 years ago. Pump died after 2 months. Brought it to a certified repair center. It took the company 8 months to figure out that they can't send the repair center a pump, so about 3 months ago, they finally sent me a brand new unit, and yesterday, the pump died again on the new unit. Stay away from this dehumidifier. The pump stinks. Oh, and this new unit leaks as much water as it sucks from the air. Stay away. The pump was a good idea but, if it doesn't work, then whats the point? STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT

1.0 out of 5 stars Delonghi - Bad product, Bad service, June 26, 2006

I paid over $300 for the DE 400P. It worked OK for about 8 months then the pump stopped working. The only reason I was willing to pay so much was for the pump. Delonghi service people have been NO help and argumentative. They tell me I must ship it to NY for them to repair. The packaging and shipping costs alone make this prohibitive. I asked to speak with a manager and got voice mail. I left a message 3 weeks ago and did not get any return call. I called back today and again got the managers voice mail.
As far as I am concerned I have never purchased a product that was so poorly supported by the manufacturer. I will never purchase another Delonghi product of any kind. And I suggest you consider where the repair centers are before you purchase one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad, bad service! Buy something else., May 31, 2006

Only two years after purchasing a DeLonghi dehumidifier, it stopped working. No one in our area (Syracuse, NY) would touch it, and the company was one of the worst we've ever dealt with. First they wouldn't believe that it didn't work, and made us try it for 48 hours before calling them back. Then their only solution was to ship it to their nearest service center, at our own expense of course, to see what's wrong with it. Needless to say we're tossing it in the trash, and buying something else, and won't buy anything with their name on it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Freeze up, May 28, 2006
This review is from: DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump (Kitchen)
Our one year old Delonghi DE400P freezes solid. I inquired with the manufacturer and they gave me retoric and a graph of when the humidifier will run into difficulty. Its now in the basement on a 88 degree day, the coil is a block of ice and it is doing nothing but eating electricity. The nearest service center will cost more in gas and time than the unit is worth. I advise passing on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Many design flaws, August 25, 2007
By
This review is from: DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump (Kitchen)
I bought this dehumidifier for basement here in New England area.
Within 6 hours, I can easily get a full bucket of water.
During the first year of use, I was quite happy with it.
It did its job of extracting water out of air and pumps the water out automatically. I like the humidity meter on the dash board also. If I was to give a review back then, I would have given 5 stars.

Unfortunately, after 1 year of use, the pump no longer works (the pump light kept blinking) and the main water container filled up and I had to dump the water manually. Since I can't return it, I decided to open it up, and attempt to fix it myself.
I have to say, with its design, I have to literally unscrew everything (20+ screws total).
After "unshelled" the dehumidifier, I discovered algae growth and design flaw of this machine.
First is the location of the secondary water reservoir (this is where the water goes to first, where the pump is connected to, and when it fills up, the water goes to the main water container). To get to the secondary water reservoir, I had to unscrew 20+ screws, and cleaning it was a pain.
Second flaw is the drain diameter to the pump, its only 4mm wide... easily clogged up by the algae.
Third, the infamous pump, it's only 1 inch by 1 inch. Tiny little thing that I would not trust in my fish tank bowel to pump bubbles. I'm surprised my lasted 1 year. Due to the algae problem, the pump is busted, it runs but no suction.
Fourth issue is the connection between the pump and the secondary water reservoir. Let say I found a way to replace the pump... well too bad, can't disconnect, any attempt will break the plastic connection and destroys the secondary water reservoir (which I did...)

The outcome of my situation is to remove the secondary water reservoir, so the water now goes directly into the main water tank (also easier to clean in the future). Then, I drilled a hole in the main water tank and allow the water come out using gravity. I'm thinking about buying a $30 pump from Homedepot so I can pump water to a desire location.

For a >$250 equipment that only works partially after one year? 2 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable unit and poor warranty service, August 27, 2005

This review is from: DeLonghi DE400P Energy-Star 40-Pint Dehumidifier with Pump (Kitchen)
This unit seemed to be working properly for about 6 months until the "condensate removal pump" stopped pumping. After that, it only collected water in the bucket, and technical support had no consumer troubleshooting other than making sure the unit was plugged in. I was surprised how little water it collected--it took almost a week to fill the bucket.

I didn't have time to drive 300 or 400 miles to either of the closest repair centers, so I waited until summer vacation to take it in for repair. I'll spare you the details of my unsatisfactory repair experience, but it should not take several months and hours of long distance phone calls to get something serviced under warranty. After a few weeks went by after they promised a replacement, but nobody could find it in the system, I gave up and bought a different dehumidifier (Comfort Aire) which seems to dry the air a lot more effectively.

I saw several of these units sitting around at the repair center (which is a general appliance repair shop, not just DeLonghi) when I dropped mine off, Apparently, this model breaks down a lot. DeLonghi seemed oblivious to the notion that if they remedied some design flaws, they could save a lot of money on warranty repairs and tech support salaries.

First, the product's quality is very low, the unit I purchase just last for 18 month, and before you make a puchase, please make sure your local area has a repire center. I lived in Atlanta, Georgia. Unfortunately, the closed one is in florida or Ohio.
